Third Grade Curriculum • English Language Arts • HMH Journeys is the CUSD adopted reading program. • Third graders continue with a Spalding program of 20 spelling words and 70 phonograms. • Third grade begins learning cursive and it is used in all of their work once letter formations are secure. We will start learning cursive very shortly. • Third graders continue to self select AR books at their levels to achieve personalized reading goals. My goal 8pts, students have created their own personal goal which equals mine or beats it, this year 250,000 words need to be read to receive first dog tag.
Third Grade Curriculum • Mathematics • CTA students are accelerated in math using Saxon. • Students are working toward mastering third and fourth grade standards. • Students will work on daily problem solving to develop critical thinking skills and apply math concepts. • Students need to master all multiplication facts by the end of the year.
Third Grade Curriculum • Science • Inquiry Process- STEM projects, Science Fair • Earth and Space Science- Geology • Physical Science- Energy: Heat, Light, and Sound • Life Science- Plants, life cycles • Health • Social Studies • Exploration and Colonization • American History- Civil War, Immigration, Leaders • Citizenship, Government, and Economics • Geography • Ancient Civilizations
Homework • Use the Weekly Agenda to guide you • Spelling, Saxon Mathboxes, AR Reading, Reading Comprehension, and Cursive (soon) • Poem Recitation twice a quarter (first one due soon!) • Parents should check homework for accuracy, check behavior, and check for work completion each night and sign agenda
Assessment • Assessments: • Saxon Math assessed every 5 lessons • Weekly spelling • Bi-monthly phonogram assessment • Weekly Journeys comprehension and vocabulary (assessments taken at end of two week story) • Periodic math facts, unit science/social studies assessments as needed
Communication • Monthly Newsletters • Progress Reports/Report Cards • Semester Conferences • Email and Remind app If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, please contact me via email or phone to schedule a conference.
Volunteers • Weekly classroom help with copying • Monthly bulletin boards • Field trips • Class events/parties • Art Masterpiece • Junior Achievement?
Start & End Times • 8:05 A.M. Students allowed on campus • 8:25 A.M. First bell • 8:30 A.M. Second bell • If you arrive after 8:30 A.M., your child is considered late. You must go to the office for a pass to class. • 9:15 – 10:15 A.M. Specials (vary according to special) • 12:00-12:35 P.M. Lunch • 3:00 P.M. Dismissal

3rd Grade Kartchner CavernsField Trip Parent Information Meeting
Field Trip Dates January 18, 2019 Leaving Carlson Elementary at 6:30 am. Returning to Carlson Elementary approximately 7:00 pm
Why do we go? • Extend our Science curriculum (rocks & minerals) as well as other curriculum objectives (maps, letter writing, graphing, functional text, etc) • MEMORIES!!! • Fun and great friends
Tentative Itinerary • 6:30 AM – Arrive at School & Load Buses • 6:45 AM – Buses Depart Carlson • 3 hour travel to Kartcher Caverns • 10:00 – Arrive At Kartchner Caverns, eat lunch • Tours begin at 10:40 and end around 3:00 • Load buses, head toward home • Get pizza dinner in Tucson, eat on the bus • Arrive back at Carlson Elementary 7:00pm • Chaperones will text parents with arrival time • as we get closer to Carlson
Fees & Chaperones • Fee for the Kartchner Caverns field trip is $50. $40 paid through activity fee and $10 food/drinks/snacks fee given to teacher prior to field trip. • Pay all fees via Infinte Campus • Lottery Drawing – Volunteer entrance fee (paid via check written to Carlson Elementary) • Volunteer Handbook-all volunteers must complete Carlson volunteer requirements • We will contact you when we get closer to see if you are available to volunteer.
More Info. • Students need to bring: • Sack lunch • Water bottle • Snacks • Polite Behavior to represent Carlson Elementary • We give them: • Pizza dinner, drink, snacks • Educational materials • A fantastic experience! Students need to wear: • Class shirt • Long pants • Tennis shoes • Jacket • Smile!
