  1. ISP IPv6 Deployment Scenarios in Wireless Broadband Access Networksdraft-ietf-v6ops-802-16-deployment-scenarios-00 Myung-Ki Shin, ETRI Youn-Hee Han, KUT IETF-66 v6ops WG@ Montreal, Canada

  2. Goal and Related Works • Goal of this Draft • Provides detailed description of IPv6 deployment and scenarios in wireless broadband access networks • Extends works of [I-D.ietf-v6ops-bb-deployment-scenarios] • Related Works • IEEE 802.16 WG develops standards for broadband wireless metropolitan area networks. • Limited to L1 and L2, so they may be used within any number of IP network architectures and scenarios • WiMAX defines IP network model and certifies interoperability • Commercial WiBro services (IPv4) started on June 30. • IESG approved 16ng WG (Internet Area) on June 28.

  3. History and Status • IETF65, March 2006 • Initial draft was presented • Accepted as a working group document • Revised Draft Published, June 2006 • draft-ietf-v6ops-802-16-deployment-scenarios-00

  4. Changes • Authors discussed the scenarios (subnet models) with 16ng (WiMAX, WiBro, etc.) experts. • Three scenarios were more clearly defined (one is removed) • According to each scenarios, the following considerations were discussed (some editorial changes) • IPv6 Related Infrastructure Changes • Addressing • IPv6 Control and Data Transport • Routing • Also, IPv6 Multicast, Mobility, QoS, Security, Network Management changes were described (some editorial changes)

  5. 802.16 Networks Elements Customer | Access Provider | Service Provider Premise | | (Backend Network) +-----+ +-----+ +------+ +--------+ | MSs |--(802.16)--| BS |-----+Access+---+ Edge | ISP +-----+ +-----+ |Router| | Router +==>Network +--+---+ +--------+ +-----+ +-----+ | | +------+ | Mss |--(802.16)--| BS |--------+ +--|AAA | +-----+ +-----+ |Server| +------+

  6. Scenario 1 • Mobile/single Device Deployment • Current WiMAX (Profile A, C), WiBro Service Model • A BS is separated from a Access Router • A subnet consists of only single router and multiple BSs and MS • All MSs by served an AR can share an IPv6 prefix • MS, AR, ER should be upgraded to IPv6 (BS is L3 unaware) +-----+ | MS1 |<-(16)-+ +-----+ | +-----+ | +-----+ +-----+ +--------+ | MS2 |<-(16)-+----| BS1 |--+->| AR |----| Edge | ISP +-----+ +-----+ | +-----+ | Router +==>Network | +--------+ +-----+ +-----+ | | MS3 |<-(16)-+----| BS2 |--+ +-----+ | +-----+ <---> IP termination +-----+ | | MS4 |<-(16)-+ +-----+

  7. Scenario 2 • Bridging to regular Ethernet Model • Hot zone Deployment • broader than Hot spot • Wireless DSL (DSL Replacement) • Networks can exist behind MS • IPv6 Addressing Issues (e.g., Prefix Delegation) +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ ISP 1 | MS1 |<-(16)+ +->| AR1 |----| ER1 |===>Network +-----+ | | +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ | +-----+ | | MS2 |<-(16)+-----| BS1 |--| +-----+ +-----+ | +-----+ +-----+ ISP 2 +->| AR2 |----| ER2 |===>Network +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ | +-----+ +-----+ |Hosts|<-->|MS/GW|<-(16)------| BS2 |--+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ <---> IP termination This network behind MS may exist

  8. Scenario 3 • 3GPP [RFC3316] - like Deployment Model • A BS is integrated with a router, composing one box in view of implementation (WiMAX Profile B). • A subnet consists of only single BS/router and single MS • IPv6 solutions would be simple (e.g., no DAD), since each MS can be on different IPv6 link. +-----+ | MS1 |<----(16)-----+ +-----+ v +-----+ +-------+ +--------+ | MS2 |<----(16)-->|BS/AR1 |---------| Edge | ISP +-----+ +-------+ | Router +==>Network +--------+ +-----+ +-------+ | | MS3 |<----(16)-->|BS/AR2 |-----------+ +-----+ +-------+ +-----+ ^ <---> IP termination | MS4 |<----(16)-----+ +-----+

  9. Next Steps • We need more review and comments. • Then we will update draft -01 before IETF-67. • WG last call with -01 ?
