  1. Quick write: How does this music make you feel? What is the mood of this music?

  2. How can we compare poetry and music?

  3. Chanson D’automne by Paul Verlaine • Write down your observations and impressions on how the poem made you feel. • Make sure to listen to the sound of the words rather than the meaning behind the words.

  4. Today our literary device focus will be on: • Assonance • Consonance • Alliteration

  5. Assonance • The repetition of vowel sounds within words • Assonance stresses certain words and moods. Example: And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride. --Edgar Allan Poe, "Annabel Lee"

  6. Exercise: • Find the examples of assonance in the following selections… Slow things are beautiful: The closing of the day, The pause of the wave That curves downward to spray. --Elizabeth Coatsworth, "Swift Things are Beautiful"

  7. Consonance • The close repetition of consonant sounds at the ends of words or syllables Example: Blank and think

  8. Alliteration • The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words or syllables Example: “sweet smell of success”

  9. Remember that for all of these devices it is similar SOUNDS, NOT letters!

  10. Work in pairs to find examples of these devices in the poem “Auto Wreck” by Karl Shapiro.

  12. Write down 10 words that you think are beautiful. Think about the meaning of the words and please be respectful in your choices.

  13. Now it is your turn to be a poet… Create your own poem using your top 10 most beautiful words. The poem does not have to rhyme but should use some of the devices we have been working with. The poem does not need to make sense, but instead should play with the sounds of words. Make your writing look like a poem by using short lines, breaking for a new line when they want to add emphasis rather than when they come to the margin

Here is a poem of my own creation with my 10 most beautiful words… A grace of golden gazelles Gathered round the gazebo Nibbling on lotus flowers and tangerines Relishing refreshing root beer on rye Laser light slashes The gazelles gabbling gaiety A kaleidoscope of flying fur and Fleeing forms!
