  1. Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature

  2. To access notes for slides Permission is granted to NSU faculty and students to teach from this PowerPoint slide show, including the notes, which may be edited or used verbatim. To access the notes, you must have MS PowerPoint installed on your PC: Go to the “Shreveport Nursing” page Click “Online Tutorials” Click on the PowerPoint you want Click “File” Click “Save As” and save to a floppy or to your hard drive Open the PowerPoint slide show from your floppy or hard drive Click “View” Click “Notes Page” (and then you will be able to edit if you wish)

  3. Go to the Library Home Page and click on “Shreveport Nursing”

  4. Click on “Nursing & Allied Health Databases”

  5. Click on “CINAHL EBSCO”

  6. Click “Advanced Search” to see more search options

  7. Select limits to refine the search strategy

  8. Other Common Limits: peer-reviewed, continuing education module, evidence-based practice, journal subsets, publication types, language, and …

  9. … gender, age groups, and special interest – all of which “limit” or “narrow” (reduce) the number of retrievals

  10. To broaden, expand, or increase the number of hits, checkmark one of these “limits”

  11. Click “CINAHL Headings” to find CINAHL’S official subject heading (controlled vocabulary) for your term.

  12. Type your term (“patient lifting”) and click Browse.

  13. Click a blue link to read the definition and see subheadings. Checkmark “Explode” to broaden the search. Checkmark “Major Concept” to limit search to articles where the subject is primary.

  14. Here are subheadings under “Transfer Techniques.” Checkmark pertinent subheadings to narrow your search. Click any “Related Heading” to see if it might apply.

  15. When finished making your selections, change the operator to OR and click ADD.

  16. Note that all your checkmarked items automatically appear in the Find box. Click “Search.”

  17. Number of Hits: 35. Click on the article link to read the abstract or obtain the complete journal title. To read article, click on “Linked Full Text.”

  18. Click on the article title link to obtain the complete journal title so you can look it up in the “NSU Journal List.”

  19. Clicking on the article title link brings us to this page, where we see that “Source” is followed by complete journal title. Click on blue links to retrieve articles on any pertinent “Major Subject” or “Minor Subject.”

  20. Go to Library Home Page and click “NSU Journal List”

  21. From CINAHL, copy and paste the complete journal title into Find box and click “Search.”

  22. No. of hits: 1. Click on the “Search Your Catalog” link and examine library holdings to determine a match with your citation.

  23. You would look for Nov./Dec., 2000, vol. 25, issue no. 6, pages 288-293. If the library does not have your issue, you can order via Interlibrary Loan, as before.

  24. Click on “Transfer Techniques—Education” and you will get …

  25. 20 hits. Click on the article links to get complete journal citations for your “NSU Journal List” search, or, link to full text.

  26. To browse a specific kind of article, click “Indexes.”

  27. Type in your topic (“transfer techniques”) and drop-down to an index, for example, “Subjects (All)”

  28. Note the number of hits on right side. Checkmark all pertinent terms. Leave operator to OR. Click Add.

  29. Note that all your checkmarked index terms now appear in Find box. Click “Search.”

  30. Number of Hits: 25. Examine each hit to determine its relevance, as before, consulting the NSU Journal List.

  31. Not in “NSU Journal List”? -- No problem. Order it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) through the Shreveport Nursing Library. To download the form, go to the Shreveport Nursing Library Home Page.

  32. Go to the Library Home Page and click on “Shreveport Nursing”

  33. Under Services, click on “Interlibrary Loan (Nursing)”

  34. Click on “Request a Nursing Interlibrary Loan”

  35. Click on your computer’s print icon to print the form. Fill in one form per article and submit it to Dot Fernandez in Shreveport.

  36. Review of Search Strategies • Use “Advanced Search” tab, CINAHL Headings, and Indexes to expand search strategies • Checkmark “Explode” to broaden search • Checkmark “Major Concept” to narrow search • Checkmark “Subheadings” to narrow search • Use OR to broaden, and AND to narrow

  37. Search Tips • Click on blue links for “Major Subjects” to narrow search • Click on blue links for “Minor Subjects” to broaden search • Go to “NSU Journal List” to search for journal titles that say “Search Your Catalog” • Use Nursing Interlibrary Loan for items we don’t have
