Thoughts and perspectives on…. Mentoring All programs focus on providing fellows strong methodological/statistical and substance skills, publications in good journals, proposal writing experience, auditing courses, and collaborating on research projects and proposals with the mentors. -Are there other creative strategies that are being used to sharpen fellows’ skills to compete and land top tier jobs? -What do people identify as the crucial skills post-docs need to obtain before completing their post-doctoral training? -How do you prepare your fellows for the job interviews? -How do you counsel fellows about planning a program of research (both as part of their fellowship and beyond)? -How do you counsel your fellows about work/life balance?
Thoughts and perspectives on…. Recruitment Is it most beneficial for the program/field and post doc to closely match the expertise of the scholar with the emphasis of the program, or to what extent is it beneficial to bring in scholars from other fields (e.g., someone in clinical psychology into science or math or literacy education) in an attempt to prepare a cross-disciplinary scholar? How much of a disciplinary stretch is too much? Can we most effectively mentor a new scholar into another discipline?
Thoughts and perspectives on…. General Advice Are there any restrictions we should be aware of in terms of the types of purchases the post docs are allowed to make with their "research fund"?
