Where they lived The Pomo were a Native American tribe that lived up in the north surrounded by other tribes . They lived from the Pacific Ocean to Clear Lake. They also lived in Mendocino, Sonoma And Lake counties. They lived near many lakes, rivers, and streams. They also lived on mountains, valleys, and rolling hills. There were many trees that grew by their homes. The summers were warm and winters were mild.
Homes The Pomo’s homes were made out of whatever kind of trees or plants and materials that grew by. A single family home is up to 8-15 across. The Pomo tribes that lived near the Russian River built their house out of brush and grass. Some Pomo’s lived near the redwood forest and they scraped the bark off the redwood and took the bark and made it into a home.
What they ate The Pomo’s ate many different foods, depending on the time of year. In the summer they ate berries, nuts, bulbs, and roots. In the winter they ate deer, elk, pronghorn, rabbits, squirrels, and birds. In the they ate acorns that were turned into mash by pounding on the acorns with a rock and they poured water on the acorns to remove the bitterness. In the spring they ate fish.
Jobs Many Pomo’s had jobs. It depended whether it was needed or not for the Pomo’s to work. Men often hunted, fished, made tools, and carved knives and axes. Men also wove fishing nets, traps, made tule canoes, and tule baby carriers. Women gathered berries ,nuts, and plants. Women prepared the food, made clothes, and wove baskets. The elders hunted, fished, and raised and took care of their grandchildren.
Clothing The Pomo’s wore different clothing to work, to hunt, or for special occasions. Usually they wore cloth made out of redwood, willow, tule bark. Men wore leggings, breechcloth, and moccasins. Women wore long skirts. Both women and men wore rabbit fur when it was chilly.
Celebrations The Pomo celebrated whenever someone died or a special holiday. The Pomo lead activities. They sang songs, played music, and danced. The Pomo’s all wore colorful clothing.
Interesting facts Here are some interesting facts about the Pomo’s. If the Pomo’s had extra food they had a feast with their friends. Only the richest Pomo’s owned deerskin robes and skirts.
