Where They Live • The Pomo were made up of 72 tribes. • Most of the Pomo lived in the Redwood Forests. • They lived in Northern California. • Their original homelands had mountains, hills, and valleys. • They also lived in small bands.
Homes • The Pomo built their homes from things in their environment. • Most of the Pomo lived in single family houses. • To make their houses they used willow poles and tule. • Their houses were not big, but for the time period they were a good size.
Family Life • Family was important to the Pomo. • They lived with their grandparents, aunts, and uncles. • The Pomo made arts and crafts together as a family. • The men of the family hunted. • The women of the family gathered food.
Clothing • The Pomo made their own clothing. • Women always wove the clothing from deerskin. • They used bone needles to sew. • The women and girls wore shirts and long skirts. • The men and boys wore breech clothes.
Foods • The Pomo hunted, fished, and gathered food. • They hunted deer and elk. • They used bows and arrows to hunt and fish with. • When they gathered food they used special baskets called seed beater baskets.
Crafts • Pomo men made canoes for their crafts. • The Pomo also made baskets. • They made a lot of beaded designs. • They made cooking pots with beads and feathers and used them often. • The Pomo enjoyed making crafts.
