Athens Sparta l • All girls in Athens cant go to school. • -Children spent most of their time with there mother. • Children spend most time with their mothers. • Many children died the first couple of days. • If a baby was not healthy and strong they would be taken away and be left to die. • The teachers was always a man. • From 6-14years old boys went to school. • At the age of 6 or 7 they start school. • When they reached 11 years old they moved to a higher level of education. Men had a much better life than women. Only men could be full citizens. Only men made the decisions. Normally, only men fought in armies and took part in sports and met in public. Women in Athens were taught skills they would need to run a home such as cooking and weaving. They were expected to look after the home, make the clothes.
Political Greece In Ancient Greece there were city-states, each were ruled differently but this will be about Sparta and Athens only. In Athens it was mostly democratic. The Athenian Democracy had two parts: the Assembly and the Council. The assembly had have at least 6000 men. If there weren’t enough men the local police would take men from the street take them and mark them with red paint to signify shame. The assembly were basically people who voted for laws and other things. The council had 500 members. Each member served for two years. They were the people who made the laws for the assembly to vote for.
Political Greece Continued… In Sparta they had a diarchy this meant it was ruled by two kings. Furthermore since most men worked to become Spartans the women had to do everything else like the education and the markets. The Ancient Greek systems of laws and government influenced Canada a lot aside from the women not being able to participate in politics, we generally use democracy and have votes
The Olympics The races and other events (games) in the ancient Olympics were not fixed in time for the first Olympics, but gradually the games evolved. Here is a list of Olympic events: • Discus • Chariot racing • Pankration=this is a combination of boxing and wrestling put together • Pentathlon=this event has three events in it they are javelin, long jump and running.
Architecture Ancient Greek architecture is best known from its temples. Many temples are found throughout the region. Ancient Greek architecture is distinguished by its highly formalized characteristics, both of the structure and decoration.
Art The art of ancient Greeks have an enormous influence on the culture of many countries all over the world, particularly in the areas of sculpture and architecture. One example of Greek art influence is the White house. The Parthenon’s Ionic columns influence the pillars in the front columns.
