How Did Athens form? • According to Greek mythology, Athens was named from the competition between Athena and Poseidon about who will become the protector of the city. • The myth says that Poseidon gave a spring with sea water whilst. While, Athena offered an olive tree as she touched the ground of the sacred rock of the Acropolis. • Since the people picked Athena as their protector, it was named after the goddess of wisdom.

The beginnings of Athens • 621 BCE Code of Draco -Strict laws to bring about order -Example: Homicide was considered religious pollution that must be avenged • 600 BCE -Farmers begin to borrow in order to better their farms and produce more. -Many were not lucky and were forced to sell their farms. -Many indebted were sold off as slaves and considered 1/6 men -Resentment grows between the rich and the poor.

Growth of Athens • 594 BCE • Solon – the law giver of Athens • Wrote laws to free Athenian citizens that were enslaved due to debt. • 546 BCE • Tyranny in Athens begins as the rich rule. • Pisistratus – tyrant ruler. He began to build up Athens’ army and navy. Started new projects to encourage trust. • 508 BCE • Tyranny is overthrown • Cleistheres rules and begins a sort of democracy • He divides the population into tribes of different peoples to avoid political factions • Each tribe elected officials to represent them

  5. Significant Events • 480 B.C – 404 B.C -Dates during Athens’ height in economy and politics • 431 – 404 • Peloponnesian War -Sparta forms Peloponnesian League to fight against Athens. This is what made the golden age so sour. -Dehan League formed to defeat Persian invasion. • After war -It continued and still required money from members. -Money from league went to Athens to build it grander. - built 460 – 430 B.C.E - Acropolis and Parthenon ( temple of Athena)

  6. religion • Religion was part of an everyday life. • People believed that gods/goddesses would make their lives better while they're living, and they would be cared for when they’re dead. • Ancient people believed in polytheism. • Spread by travelers; in order to understand nature, they created myths about gods and demi-gods. • Since there was gods/goddesses for every aspect of life, people created religious temples like the Parthenon. • It has goddess Athena as a gold and ivory statue. • Although the gods/goddesses were helpful, they would punish someone if that person displeases them.

Golden age of Athens • 480 BCE to 404 BCE • Oracle of Delphi at its height • Self- control and all with moderation • At 440 BCE: • Population 300,000 people. • 100,000 slaves. • Delian League formed to defeat the invading Persians • After the war, the monies collected by the league were taken to Athens to better Athenian life. • Acropolis and Parthenon built between 460 BCE -430 BCE. • Sparta and neighboring states became bothered by Athens abuses.

  9. Decline of Athens • 431 BCE – 404 BCE • Peloponnesian War • Sparta forms the Peloponnesian League to fight Athens. • The war made the last years of the Golden Age of Athens go sour • Athens is defeated; despite defeat…A golden Age of Philosophy follows in Athens
