What were they • Jim Crow Laws are all kinds of laws against African Americans. • Mostly Separation Laws like white and black schools, trains, buses, ect. • Mostly in them South.
The Civil War • The Civil War brought an end to slavery. • Also gave African Americans Equal Rights. • But still did not put an end to Jim Crow Laws.
Why Seperation Laws • Were put in place to make the African Americans know he was not equal to a white man. • They were “separate but equal”.
Homer Plessy • Homer Plessy was a lighter colored African American. • He got onboard a white mans train cart in Louisiana and refused to leave when asked to do so. • He then was arrested and took to court. • Ended up going to the Supreme.
Plessy V. Ferguson • At supreme court. • Law in Louisiana that did not give African American equal rights(Plessy). • Supreme court denied the African American there Civil Rights.
The Spread • For nearly 50 years after the Plessy V. Ferguson case Jim Crow Laws popped up all over America. • African Americans were separate but equal.
Why Jim Crow • Jim Crow laws got there name a pretty interesting way. • From a minstrel show character named Jim Crow who was darker colored. • Jim Crow was more nicer than saying “N-word laws.
The End of the laws • 1914. • Case Brown V. Board of Education. • Separation of Schools was unconstitutional. • of the 14th Amendment equal protection laws. • Put an end to Jim Crow Laws.
