Standards • ELACC6RL1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. • ELACC6RL2: Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. • ELACC6RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.

Key Terms • Inference • any process of reasoning from premises to a conclusion • main idea • the most important or central thought of a paragraph or larger section of text, which tells the reader what the text is about • summary • A brief abstract of previously stated facts or statements • figurative language • language that contains or uses figures of speech, especially metaphor & simile • connotation • the associated or secondary meaning of a word or expression in addition to its explicit or primary meaning: A possible connotation of “home” is “a place of warmth, comfort, and affection.”
