There are five dialogues in this part, all of which are very easy. Ask the students to read them together in groups. They may discuss the problems while reading. Notes: 1). Can I help you with your luggage? a. help somebody with something e.g. Can you help me with my English? b. luggage n. the cases, bags, boxes, etc. of a traveler e.g. Can you move these three pieces of luggage to the car? Notes: 2). It’s quite different from what I expected. Different adj. not alike 不同的;差异的e.g. It’s something different. My opinion is quite different from yours. 3).the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland ( abbr. U.K.) 4).to get used to something, to become used/ accustomed to Step one: Dialogues (2)
Ask the students to read the dialogues again for some minutes. This time they are allowed to read in pairs loudly. Step two: Reading
Ask the students to read the phonetics in groups, at this time the teacher walks around the classroom to answer questions or correct the errors if any; and then ask the students to read those phonetics together; at last ask individuals to read in class. Step three: Phonetics(2) • Notes: • 1) His father and mother went through thick and thin. a. to go though means to experience b. the whole sentence means his father and mother experienced much difficulty. • 2).All that glitters is not gold. 闪光的不都是金子。
Step three: Phonetics(3) • 3).A good beginning makes a good ending. 好的开始意味着好的结束(结果)。 • 4). Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves. 积小流成江河。 • The above three sentences are saying. The students should remember them.
Step four: Exercise • 1. Exercises 3. Ask the students to practice reading the sentences in groups for a few minutes, and then ask individuals to read aloud in class. • 2. Exercises 6. Ask the students to make up dialogues in pairs. A few minutes later, ask some pairs to act out their dialogues in class. 返回in-class

After-class (2) • If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention; I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we begin early enough. I often hear grown-up people say, “I could not fix my attention on the lecture or book, although I wished to do so,” and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth (cont’d).
After-class (3) • I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I would strength that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.
