Prefix Power! – Informational Section • Target Audience: • Eighth grade students having scored a two or lower on the reading comprehension section of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Students scoring a two or below are enrolled in intensive reading courses. These courses are geared toward elevating reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. • Instructional Objectives: • To increase learners’ vocabulary skills by: • Providing general information about root words and prefixes. • Providing instruction about common prefixes and meanings. • Cognitive Learning Objectives: • Declarative: To learn about and correctly identify prefixes. • Procedural: To correctly identify prefixes and their meanings. • Strategic: To correctly apply prefixes to root words in order to change the root word’s meaning

Prefix Power! – Root Words In order to understand what a prefix is, you must first learn about root words. Click me and find out! What is a Root Word? P
What is a Root Word? • A root word is a word that you can make into a new word by adding a beginning or ending. Lets look at some examples, select one! EXAMPLE 1 P EXAMPLE 2
Root Word-Example 1 • Here we have the root wordspell. • Add the beginning mis to it and you have misspell. • Root Word = Spell + (beginning) Mis = Misspell Return

What is a Prefix? • A prefix is the beginning that is added to a root word. Lets look at some examples, select one! EXAMPLE 1 P EXAMPLE 2
Prefix - Example 1 • Here we have the prefixRe. • Add the root wordtie to it and you have retie. • Prefix = Re + (root word) tie = Retie Return

Prefix Power! How is a prefix powerful? Each prefix has its own meaning. With just the simple addition of a prefix to a root word, the entire meaning of the root word can change! P

Prefix Power! – Example 1 • Here is an example of how a prefix can change a root word’s meaning: • Prefix=Re means again • When re is added to the root wordplay it changes the meaning of play to play again. Return
