The Rebirth of the Olympics By Luke Never before, until 1924, was there a Winter Olympics. Pierre Coubertin came up with the idea of these games. Many people did not believe in him or his idea. Thanks to Pierre we are able to watch or take part in the Winter Olympics.

  2. Never before, until 1924, was there a Winter Olympics. Pierre Coubertin came up with the idea of these games. Many people did not believe in him or his idea. Thanks to Pierre we are able to watch or take part in the Winter Olympics.

Pierre de Coubertin • Born in Paris, 1863 • Father was artist + mother was musician • Refused military career + political career • Wanted France to rise again after the war in 1870 (Franco-Prussian War) • On June 23, 1894 he founded the International Olympic Committee • The first Winter Olympics is held in Chamonix, France in 1924 • Died of a heart attack on September 2, 1937 • His heart was placed inside a statue made to his memory at Olympia, Greece where it is today

  4. Events • There were 7 sports and16 events • Bobsleigh • Curling • Figure skating • Ice hockey • Military patrol-(biathlon) • Nordic skiing • Speed skating

  5. Athletes+Nations of the 1924 Olympics • 16 nations • 250 athletes • 13 female athletes • Charles Jewtraw of the USA won the first gold medal • Clas Thunberg got three gold medals, one silver, one bronze • Sonja Henie of Norway was 11 years old when she skated in the 1924 Olmpics

  6. Facts • The only sport open to women was figure skating • When Pierre Coubertin announced his idea to the USFSA it was greeted with little excitement • Pierre thought education was the key for the future world • Pierre was a very active sportsman: boxing, fencing, rowing, and horse riding.

  7. Conclusion • So as you can see, all Pierre’s work was not in vain. He brought back the games that link the world together. Coubertin brought great joy to the world.
