Background • What is the Trevithick Trail? • 9 mile route taken by Richard Trevithick’s steam locomotive • First steam engine in the world to successfully travel on rails • MTCBC secured funding (via WEFO) to enhance the route. • New pathways, signage, information points, marketing etc. • The original bid made no allowances for artwork
The Artwork Project • Secured £12k for artwork during Phase 1 • Artwork managed by GATES • Community involvement • Local ownership • Reduce vandalism • Social connections • New skills, opportunities
What kind of involvement? Participation • Photography • Practical workshops – Picking and sticking • Design – Drawing and layout • Film – camera work, editing etc Engagement • Sculpting display at the Merthyr Show • Awareness raising – banners and woodwork

Trevithick Banner Making Project • To celebrate the trail launch in September • 100 banners to line the route • Contemporary - images of local people • Workshops throughout the summer • MTHA, Youth Inclusion Team, Hafal, Merthyr show etc • Photography, picking and sticking
Trevithick Trail Granite markers • Four slabs of granite (8’x4’) • Four themes – engine, people, nature, map • Practical hands on workshops • Combining banner imagery with granite
Trevithick Trail Stones • 15 pennant stones • Sand blasted with text – English and Welsh • Workshops • Text influenced by Exciting Writing squad • Picking and sticking workshops • Way markers
