5G is driving Telcos’ transformation What 5G will bring Speed Users Devices Power consumption Latency Availability Source: 5G PPP A radical transformation of vertical sectors 5G: L'industria e le città, ITALIA 5G - IOTHINGS2018, Milan (IT), 10 Apr. 2018 • Digitalization of vertical markets • Automotive, transportation, manufacturing, banking, city management, energy, utilities, real estate, retail…. • Sustainable and scalable technology • Growth in number of terminal devices and traffic • Heterogeneous network layouts • Enriched and automated service model • Auto-provisioned service through central end-to-end orchestration • Network analytics also exposed to Verticals
Multiple industries impacted by the 5G rise Source: 5G PPP 5G: L'industria e le città, ITALIA 5G - IOTHINGS2018, Milan (IT), 10 Apr. 2018
A business ecosystem rapidly growing • New products getting ready for the market • 5G New Radio & NG core • Intelligent network function placement • Secure & reliable end-to-end orchestration • Multi-domain and multi-layer security • Service continuity during disasters • Futuristic scenarios (beyond connectivity) becoming service propositions • AR/VR for Media & Entertainment • Connected cars • Smart Cities • Etc. Source: 5G PPP 5G: L'industria e le città, ITALIA 5G - IOTHINGS2018, Milan (IT), 10 Apr. 2018 • New business opportunities for traditional and new stakeholders • Telcos/NSPs, Vendors • Virtual Service Providers, Service brokers • SMEs & start-ups
New roles and relationships in the 5G industry • To a wider market around virtualized infrastructures with • Infrastructure owners (e.g. municipalities), offering space in street cabinets, lampposts or buildings along with power supply and connectivity to edge and core computing facilities • Software Developers (e.g. SMEs), providing VNFs, VApps, orchestration & control tools • Multi-Content/Multi-Service Providers, who intend to operate in more than one vertical industry and to develop services and contents for end-users, i.e. the citizens 5G: L'industria e le città, ITALIA 5G - IOTHINGS2018, Milan (IT), 10 Apr. 2018 • From the traditional Telco business of • Hardware Manufacturers/Vendors • Network Operators • Content/Service Providers

The 5GCity project approach 5G: L'industria e le città, ITALIA 5G - IOTHINGS2018, Milan (IT), 10 Apr. 2018 Design, develop, deploy and demonstrate a distributed cloud and radio platform for municipalities acting as5G neutral hosts • Main innovations • Distributed, 3-tier architecture for network sharing, slicing and mobile edge computing • MEC Node Virtualization Platform and Guest Optimizations • Unikernels and containers for reduced boot times (i.e. in 10s-100s ms depending on CPU arch) and lightweight images (i.e., in the few MBs) • VM-to-VM throughput >= 9.5 Gb/s in street cabinets, wireless virtualization for 802.11 radios with throughput >= 3 Gb/s and isolation guarantees in mesh networks of up to 20 devices • Scalable edge management & orchestration, and 5GCity edge service programming models • A few seconds for edge service instantiation, orchestrator response, streaming analytics for monitoring, reallocation of service flows, VM migration • 5GCity city-wide pilots deployment and validation • Demonstration in three different cities: Barcelona, Bristol and Lucca
