IATA’s Mission “To represent and serve the airline industry”
Why do we need a new CSN/ATM system? • Steady increase of traffic • Increasing delays • Increasing service costs • Increasing operating costs In summary: A global transparent efficient ATM system is needed to replace the present Air Navigation System.
What is the new CNS/ATM system? • “Satellite based?” • ADS B, C : ATN : VDL Mode 2, 3, 4 : Voice versus Data-link: Automation etc. However, it is not only about technology CNS/ATM is also a concept
The new CNS/ATM concept : • enables airlines to enjoy: Safe Operation On Time Performance • provides required capacity for at least next two decades • accommodates requested routes by the introduction of new technology and operational procedures.
Hurdles to overcome • Establishment of requirements • Identification of benefits • System alternatives • Institutional issues • Different needs/objectives • European 5 Point Action Plan • IATA/CANSO Vision
Why an IATA CNS/ATM Strategic Plan? • Global ATM limitations: 2018 • Significant investment • Commitment • Implementation • Regional priorities • Avoid duplications • Global interoperability
IATA strategic role • IATA to accept the challenge • Established global presence • Co-ordination with ICAO • Industry involvement • Protect airline’s investments
IATA Strategic Plan • Concentrate on early benefits • Develop major policy positions • Special interest or ‘core’ groups • Commit to strategic planning • Transition in small increments • Transfer successful steps • Learn from mistakes • Information management
Industry Communication Issues • Future requirements • Overall Comm infrastructure • Supporting systems • Service delivery provisions • ACARS transition to ATN • Introduction of ATS data link
