About the Name • Nez Perce is pronounced Nay-Persay. • They called themselves Nimiipuu (Nee-Mee-Poo) which means “The People”. • The name Nez Perce was given to the Nimiipuu by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. • The name Nez Perce means pierced nose, but they really didn’t pierce their noses.
Where did theylive? • They lived in long houses and tepees. • In the summer they lived in mountain meadows. • In the winter they moved to warm valleys. • They lived in parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
What did the NezPercewear? • The Nez Perce men wore long buckskin shirts with breech cloth, leggings, and moccasins. • The women wore doeskin dresses that were dyed or decorated with moccasins that went up to their knees.
