  2. What Nez Perce ate… Salmon and other fish. Wild carrots and potatoes. Dried berries, nuts, and dry meat. Sheep, bears, elk, and other deer.

About the Name • Nez Perce is pronounced Nay-Persay. • They called themselves Nimiipuu (Nee-Mee-Poo) which means “The People”. • The name Nez Perce was given to the Nimiipuu by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. • The name Nez Perce means pierced nose, but they really didn’t pierce their noses.

  4. Where did theylive? • They lived in long houses and tepees. • In the summer they lived in mountain meadows. • In the winter they moved to warm valleys. • They lived in parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

  5. What did the NezPercewear? • The Nez Perce men wore long buckskin shirts with breech cloth, leggings, and moccasins. • The women wore doeskin dresses that were dyed or decorated with moccasins that went up to their knees.
