  1. A Technology- based assignment By Krysta Larsen, Cassy Johnston, Kendra Horvath, and Brianna Klassen

  2. Rejections of Liberalism In Nazi Germany and Soviet Communism • -Rule of law: No is above the law. This is a lie. • -Private Property (in Russia): You had none. • -Individual Rights and Freedoms: You think what we tell you to think. Or die. • -Self-Interest: Even if you thought you were working for yourself, the government got it all.

  3. Justification • Germany • Even if Hitler was a crazed maniac, he still helped the country out of major recession. This made him seem like a better person, and people pretended not to know what he was really up to. He gave the people of Germany a sense of security as well as a strong pride in their "Aryan nation" • Russia • Stalin was crazy. Only acceptable way to justify his killing of people.

  4. Appealing Qualities of Fascism and Communism The circumstances in which the ideologies of Fascist and communism would sound appealing include desperation, and conformity. Desperation: When individuals are at rock bottom they will accept anything or anyone that is willing to help. They believe that it cannot get any worse so the ideologies of Fascism and Communism look appealing to them. An example of this is in Germany when quality of life was at an all time low and people were desperate. Hitler, a charming and charismatic leader, shows up and they accept him immediately out of desperation. Conformity: When everyone else is doing something, sometimes the rest of the people follow along like cattle. They believe that if the majority is doing it then it must be the right thing to do.

  5. Elements of Fascism and Communism that could be considered Liberal The element of everyone for themselves and working individually could be compared to the liberal ideas of self interest and competition. When everyone is for themselves then there will always be the element of competition. People will be working towards their own needs and goals and not really caring about others. In communism people do not have individual ownership of things so it can’t be compared to most of liberalism policies, except Rule of Law. In both rule of law and communism people are to be viewed equally. Under rule of law individuals are viewed as equals and are protected under the rule of law. In communism classes are removed and the property is owned by everyone equally.

  6. North Korea vs. Germany • Both contemporary North Korea and classical Germany are reactionary examples of Liberalism. Both countries have taken a country in need and tried to rebuild and sculpture a nation in need. Germany was suffering through a great depression when Hitler came to bring forth a lost economy. Hitler brought many things back to Germany, money and jobs, but he also lost the respect of many people. North Korea, today, has a very poor economy such as the industrial capital stock beyond repair. North Korea also faces many other troubles like natural disasters flooding causing food shortages while Germany relied on many trades to allow goods into the country and when the suppliers cut off they lost a lot of money. Germany also printed more moneys therefore facing cash that was utterly worthless while shortages of fuel and they are unable to run machinery. Both countries leader took a dying military and rebuild before concern of exports and currency therefore ignoring the needs of the people and building a self reliant country that is rich in economic success. North Korean leaders, like Hitler, have been working with a communist government to rebuild a country that allows Korea to overcome economic troubles.

  7. Connections between Liberalism et al • 1.Rule of Law • -All men are created equal, they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness (D of I) • -Law can only prohibit such actions as are hurtful to society. Nothing may be prevented which is not forbidden by law, and no one may be forced to do anything not provided for the law. (D of the R) • -As all persons are held innocent until they shall have been declared guilty, if arrest shall be deemed indispensable, all harshness not essential to the securing of the prisoner’s person shall be severely repressed by law. (D of the R) • 2.Economic Freedom • -A common contribution is essential for the maintenance of the public forces and for the cost of administration. This should be equal distributed among all the citizens in proportion to their means. (D of the R)

  8. Continued • 3.Private Property • -Since property is an inviolable and sacred right, no one shall be deprived thereof except where public necessity, legally determined, shall clearly demand it, and then only on condition that the owner shall have been previously and equitably indemnified. (D of the R) • 4.Competition/Self Interest • -All the citizens have a right to decide, either personally of by their representatives, as to the necessity of the public contribution; to grant this freely; to know to what uses it is put; and to fix the proportion, the mode of assessment and of collection and the duration of the taxes. (D of the R) • 5.Individaul rights and freedoms • -Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. (D of the R) • -That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and Independent States (D of I) • -He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. (D of I)

  9. Themes of Liberalism in the Documents The common themes of classical liberalism in the documents are the fact that they both demand the factors of liberalism (Rule of Law, Economic Freedom, Private Property, Competition/ Self Interest, Individual Rights and Freedoms). The Declaration of Independence also has the common theme that the Crown has not shown any of the factors of classical liberalism.

  10. Who Influenced the Documents? • Thomas Hobbes- Believed that if a leader did not protect the citizens, they could overthrow him. He also valued the worth and protection of individual subjects. Hobbes emphasized the best interests of individuals and this reflects the importance of rights and freedoms. • Adam Smith- He believed that if individuals were free to make their own decisions in a free market, and their self interests would benefit people as a whole. He opposed mercantilism and a free market and limited government role in the economy was the way to go. • John Locke- Advocated for rule of law and protection of civil liberties, rights and freedoms under a constitution. He focused on reason and logic to determine peoples actions. He also believed humans had inalienable natural rights: Life, liberty, security, and private property.
