Dialects in News and Art “The study of current news sources provides a starting point for the debate and discussion of socially relevant issues in the classroom” (pg. 212). • Goal of incorporating news and art in the classroom is to teach children how to develop informed opinions and interact critically with news media. Discussion Question: What kind of social issues do you think are important to incorporate into the elementary classroom?
Goals of Art Education Course • A major goal was to foster an understanding through the visual arts of the world and self that can be applied to teaching children in various settings and subjects (pg. 213). • “One can easily find art historical information about artists in the canon, but that one needs art education to see the educative potential in alternative and contemporary artistic practices” (pg. 214) - 1992 Art Education student
Components of Art Education Class • Research Logs • Targeting News Issues and Selecting Artists
Research Logs • Journal and diary writing helps students to record their reflections and develop their ideas in other areas. (pg. 215) • “Students need to find a personal voice before dialogue can take place in a larger culture and journal writing develops that voice” (pg. 215) • The logs were designed to help preservice teachers make informed interpretations about complex artworks and make informed interpretations about complex artworks in order to incorporate issue-based artworks into their planning.
Discussion Questions • Have you ever had to keep a journal or research log in a class? • Did you find it helpful to record your thoughts? Why?
Targeting News Issues and Artists • Example: Teachers taught a lesson on “Caring for the Earth and its Animals” • Lesson tied in looking at art works of animals in their habitats and drawing animals while teaching a lesson on animal characteristics, habitats, and how to keep the environment clean.
Conceptual Predispositions • Traditional teaching leans towards conserving existing systems transmitting knowledge in a seemingly neutral, non political way. • A focus on social issues creates an attitude that art is never politically neutral. • Teachers and students should begin to sort out written, broadcast, and visual representations of contemporary social realities and relate them to their own lived experience.
Activity • Look at the news articles provided. • Respond to the questions on the sheet provided. • Discuss among your group.
“By studying and modeling selected contemporary artists, preservice teachers can learn diverse modes and strategies for socially responsible critique. They can develop ways to apply those strategies to teaching in elementary schools and lay the groundwork for equitable race, ethnic, gender, and class relations in a democratic society” (pg. 222)
