International Climate Financing

This initiative aims to raise awareness about the impacts of open burning on health, food security, and climate. It highlights the need for international climate financing to support measures such as loans/grants for equipment and low-cost loans for farmers committing to not burning for a specific period. Verification through satellite monitoring is also suggested. More information can be found at www.iccinet.org.

  2. Growing awareness of impact of open burning on: • Health • Food security • Climate INTERNATIONALCRYOSPHERE CLIMATEINITIATIVE www.iccinet.org

  3. Health: • 5-10 percent of global air pollution deaths (approximately 250,000 deaths annually) are due to open biomass burning. • PM2.5 from agricultural sources is the main contributor to premature mortality from air pollution for the eastern U.S., Europe, Russia, and East Asia. 4. Climate: PERU baseline CO2 annual emissions from all open burning average around 170 million metric tons. The past three years’ emissions are shown below: Your text here Calculated from 375 m VIIRS, using published emissions from Akagi et al. (2011) and fuel loadings from  van Leeuwen et al. (2014).

  5. Many national and international agencies starting to offer support for not burning • Potential financing mechanisms: • Loans/grants for equipment • Low interest rates • Combinations of loans/grants INTERNATIONALCRYOSPHERE CLIMATEINITIATIVE www.iccinet.org

  6. Low-cost or no-cost loans, to be repaid over a period of time (5 years?) based on: • increased yields • lower costs (for fertilizer, fuel or on-farm benefits such as electricity generation), and/or: INTERNATIONALCRYOSPHERE CLIMATEINITIATIVE www.iccinet.org

  7. Forgiving the smallest loans, especially to small farms. • Cost would be commitment to not burning for loan period – 5 years? • Verification by satellite monitoring INTERNATIONALCRYOSPHERE CLIMATEINITIATIVE www.iccinet.org
