Political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia formed through a charter agreement adopted by member local governments. • Governance: 2 elected officials from each local govt. • Purpose: To conduct regional planning and assist local governments in planning for the future. • 3 Primary Programs: Transportation Planning (FAMPO), Transportation Demand Management (GW RideConnect) & Regional Planning (GWRC)
Regional Planning • Affordable Housing: • Staff support to Affordable Housing Task Force • Neighborhood Stabilization Program grants for $6.2 million • Residential Energy Efficiency & Conservation Grant (Caroline, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania & Stafford) for $1 million • Environmental Planning: • Staff Support to Green Government Commission & its Sub-Committees • Developing regional Green Infrastructure Plan, providing local governments a regional framework to guide reforestation, tree conservation, land conservation • Update of All-Hazards Mitigation Plan to address coordinated actions in response to natural disasters • Pending grant to work with Caroline Co on code revisions to coordinate Co response to various State regulations
Regional Planning (continued) • Demographic & Economic Forecasting • Work with Mary Washington Healthcare on Community Needs Assessment • Support Local Governments and regional non-profits in accessing and interpreting demographic & economic information • Local Planning Assistance • Provide staff review comment on draft local plans to enhance coordination and consistency across the region • Assist with planning grant development & implementation • Coordinate local GIS implementation to try to harmonize land use classifications and data layer development.
