Time Management Getting the job done outside a structured office environment
Set a schedule and stick to it • Analyze your biorhythms and schedule your work accordingly • Do your most difficult, concentration-intensive work during your most productive hours • Try to avoid non-work-related activities during your scheduled work hours • On a day when you are unable to stick to your regular schedule, keep track of the hours you work
Compartmentalize! • Don’t let your domestic life intrude on your professional life, and vice versa
Don’t be harder–or easier– on yourself than your boss would be • Set realistic goals for yourself • Stop and take a break during the day • Know when to call it quits • Jump at the chance to put in extra time if you need to, when the opportunity presents itself
Make every minute count • When you can’t concentrate on the job at hand, switch tasks • When inspiration hits, go with it! And stick with it for as long as it lasts
Keep distractions to a minimum • Use the internet for work purposes only • Keep separate accounts for personal and professional email. Avoid using personal email during work hours • Weed out spam messages as soon as you open your email • Screen incoming phone calls, and don’t answer calls that might distract you from your work
Have a Plan B • A routine is important. Nonetheless, sometimes even the best time management techniques fall apart. Then you need a Plan B • The essence of time management: being able to identify and implement alternative strategies when the usual ones are not applicable. Be creative!
