  2. What is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is an on-the-job training program for people who want to work in a skilled trade or occupation and includes learning new skills from skilled journeypersons.

  7. What are the rules? To enter OYAP a student must: • Complete all 16 credits (Grade 9 and 10) • Be at least 16 years old • Good attendance in school • Courteous, positive and responsible attitude • Sincere interest in skills training • Two year commitment and maintain 70% average

  11. Pros and Cons Pros: 1. Skilled trade pays well, challenges intellect and creativity 2. Smooth transition into an apprenticeship 3. First step in career path to multiple trades 4. Paid while learning 5. Excellent career opportunities 6. High job satisfaction, good income, and a life long career 7. Work while still attending school

Cons: 1) 2 year commitment and maintain 70% average 2) Aren’t learning the same material as other students 3) Earlier attendance record in school affects your future career 4) Not for everyone 5) Starting young, so you may not be mature or capable enough to perform your best. 6) Close other doors if things don’t work out.
