What’s an internship? • On-the-job training for white-collar and professional careers • These are similar to apprenticeships for trade and vocational jobs • Typically for college or university students • Exchange of service between student and employer • Used to determine interest in careers, to increase network or obtain school credit • A vehicle to gain full-time employment

Determine your Internship Goals • What are you goals for obtaining an internship? • What are your specific career interests? • Why do you want an internship -- and what do you hope to gain from it? • What type of organization are you interested in? Fortune 500? Not-for-profit? Size and culture will matter. Where are you most comfortable? • What industry would be best for your needs? Research and read about current industry trends. Look at job postings on CL. • Where? If your internship is during the regular semester, you may need to be close to campus or virtual. • Will you consider both paid and nonpaid internships? Prepare/Polish Your Job Search Skills • Do you have a resume? • As internships become more and more competitive, it becomes even more important for you to have a strong set of job-search skills • You may want to visit Science 127 to complete and polish the following: • Cover Letter Writing • Resume Preparation • Interviewing Strategies
Find/Track Down Internship Sources • Career Services Office (Science 127 and Cloud Hall Bulletin Board) • Instructors • Networking Sources. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a specific type of Internship; these people should include your family, your friends (at school and at home), your family's friends, your professors, past employers, alumni. Take our your ear buds. • Internship and Career Fairs – Go even if you don’t think.... • Alumni Office at your four year school or university • Company Websites • Internship Websites (we’ll review further) • Books and Periodicals. There are some great print sources of internships. First, there are annual directories of internships. • Cold Calling
After you’ve found sources • It’s like job hunting • Be persistent • It’s a numbers game • Follow-up with thank you notes • Network – spread the work • Squeaky wheel gets the grease • Google “Internship Resources for College Students”
Using LinkedIn • Create a professional brand on LinkedIn (Google search) • LinkedIn’s Learning Center helps you develop an appealing page • Get the attention of employers • Awards, education, personal blog and professional achievements • Spend time building your page (brand) • Differentiate yourself and get positive attention • Share tips on LinkedIn answers • Use your brand on job boards, social media sites and include your LinkedIn account on your resume
LinkedIn:Build Your Professional Network • Connections on LinkedIn can help get internships • You can connect by school, company and other matching details • Get a connection with an “insider” of a company • If you’re close with the mutual connection, ask for an online or better yet, face-to-face introduction • Could there be an unlisted internship?
LinkedIn:Find Internships and Jobs • Companies and employers with LinkedIn accounts post internship opportunities • LinkedIn has a robust search feature • Search by people, groups, companies, jobs and answers • Join internship groups or create a new one for a chosen field and/or location • i.e. New York Fashion Interns • LinkedIn can maximize online and offline professional connections
