What is AVID? • AVID is school-wide academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success • Specifically targets and serves students who are minority, rural, low-income who do not have a college-going tradition in their families • AVID is for all students • AVID is now prevalent in many schools and districts throughout the nation
What AVID is NOT • AVID is NOT a remedial program • AVID is NOT a free ride • AVID is NOT a niche program • AVID is NOT a college outreach program • It DOES provide essential strategic skills to specifically prepare students for college
“Strategic Socialization” • Organization and study habits • Effective questioning and active learning • Class participation and peer collaboration • Ability to synthesize information
Habits of Mind Closely Related to College Readiness • Intellectual openness • Inquisitiveness • Analysis • Reasoning, argumentation, proof • Interpretation • Precision and accuracy • Problem solving
AVID Target Student Group • Ability: • The targeted AVID students typically receive C and B grades but are capable of much higher success • AVID students succeed in college preparatory courses with support • Desire and Determination: • AVID students want to attend college • AVID students are willing to work hard to get there • Serving Typically Disenfranchised groups: • In many cases, AVID students come from a low-income household, and typically do not have access to essential resources, information, and opportunities to advance themselves academically or socially • In many cases AVID students will be the first in their family to attend college • Without AVID many targeted students are historically unlikely to attend college
AVID Student Culture… • Take College Prep Courses • Attend Summer School—enriched studies and advanced standing (college) courses • Prepare for College Entrance Exams • Participate in Extracurricular Activities (ex. Community service, fundraising) • Including regular visits to university and college campuses
The AVID Elective Class • WICR—Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading • Organizational and study skills • Critical thinking and probative questioning skills • Academic support • Enrichment and motivational activities
AVID Results • AVID students are more likely to complete their college eligibility requirements • More than 80% of AVID students are accepted to four-year universities and colleges • Once accepted to college, AVID students possess the strategic skills they need to be successful
Student Requirements • Maintain a 2.0 minimum GPA at all times • Submit weekly grade checks to AVID advisor • Take College Prep Courses—including AP and Honors • Attend Summer School—enriched studies and advanced standing (college) courses • Prepare for College Entrance Exams • ALL 9th and 10th Grade AVID students take the PSAT Exam • ALL 11th and 12th Grade AVID students take the SAT and ACT exams • Participate in Extracurricular Activities (ex. Community service, fundraising) • Including regular visits to university and college campuses
