Purpose This module proposes to expand the basic teaching learning activities of English included in the Title V Cooperative Project: “Improving Academic Outcomes Through a Teaching-Based Consortium Program for the Core Curriculum”. The project is integrated by the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Ponce from where it is directed, the Arecibo, Mayagüez and Guayama Campuses, the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico and Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Guayama Campus.
Introduction An important skill an ESL (English as a Second Language student houldmaster to communicate effectively in English orally as well as in written form is the use of Subject and Object Pronouns. This module has been designed for all college students but specially for you students who are registered in the basic English as a Second Language I, GEEN 1101 course. In this module you will study and review the rules and examples of how to use Subject Pronouns and Object Pronouns correctly.
Objectives General Objective: By the end of this module, the student will develop confidence and demonstrate knowledge using Subject Pronouns and Object Pronouns in oral and written form according to the rules presented. Specific Objective: At the end of this module, the student will learn how to distinguish between Subject Pronouns and Object Pronouns and use them correctly in oral and in written form to refer to different subjects.

Grammar Notes • A pronoun replaces a noun. A subject pronoun replaces a noun in subject position (in front of the verb). Example: Alexandra loves Carlos. She loves Carlos. (She refers to Alexandra) • Sometimes a pronoun refers to a “noun phrase.” Example: I have an extra calculator. It is on my desk. (Itrefers to the noun phrase an extra calculator)
Grammar Notes • An object pronoun replaces a noun in object position (after the verb). Example: Alexandra loves Carlos. Alexandra loves him. (himrefers to Carlos) • We can use an object pronoun after the verb or after a preposition. Examples: 1. Ana helpsLaura.(verb: helps) Ana helpsher. 2. Ana writes toLaura.(preposition: to) Ana writes toher.
Grammar Notes • We can use an object pronoun to substitute for an object. Examples: 1. He loves his wife. The children loveher too. (his wife→ object of the sentence) (her→ object pronoun that substitutes his wife) 2. I have a middle name. I use it when I sign my name. (a middle name→ object of the sentence) (it→ object pronoun that substitutes a middle name)
Grammar Notes • We use the object pronounthem for plural people, animals and objects. Examples: 1. We have two children. We love them. (two children→ plural people) (them→ object pronoun that substitutes twochildren) 2. I need my books. I use them in class. (books→ plural objects) (them→ object pronoun that substitutes books) 3. Susan has dogs and cats. She lovesthem. (dogs and cats→ plural animals) (them→ object pronoun that substitutes dogs and cats)
Grammar Notes • An object pronoun can follow a preposition for example: of, about, to, from, in, etc… Examples: 1. I have two last names. I use both ofthem. (them →substitutes the noun last names and follows the preposition of) 2. My sister has a son.She always talks abouthim. (him→ substitutes the noun a son and follows the preposition about)

Subject Pronouns she → → ella it → → eso, ello we → → nosotros(as)
Subject Pronouns you → → ustedes (plural) they → → ellos, ellas
Examples in Spanish 1. Yo te amo. (a ti) 2. Tú me amas. (a mi) 3. Ella lo ama. (a él) 4. Él la ama. (a ella) 5. Nosotros lo amamos. (a un animal u objeto)
