I.Readjustment and Recovery • Suburbs were developed in response to the housing crisis caused by returning soldiers • Despite a short recession following the war, the economy made a remarkable recovery • GI Bill- paid for veterans to go to college
D. Truman issue an executive order desegregating the troops and ending discrimination in the hiring of government employees. E. Congress refused to pass Truman’s civil rights bills
II. 1948 Election • To protest Truman’s emphasis on civil rights, southern Democrats known as Dixiecrats formed their own party and challenged Truman • Truman won reelection by denouncing the “Do-nothing Congress” • Truman proposed an ambitions economic program known as the Fair Deal
III. Jackie Robinson A. In 1947 Jackie Robinson became the first major league baseball player to break the color barrier.
IV. Containment • The US adopted a policy of containment towards communism. 1. This meant that the US would take measures to prevent any extension of communist rule to other countries.
B. Civil War in China 1) The United States supported the Nationalists. 2) The Communist win! 3) Fear of communism grows
C. The Korean War • Truman doesn‘t want containment to fail in Korea so he sends troops to fight against the communist in North Korea. • The War ends in a stalemate but increases fears of Communism in the US.
IV. McCarthyism • The Anti-Communist Senator went on a witch hunt looking for communists. • The Loyalty Review Board was established to find communists who were working for the government.
C. The House Un-American Activities committee investigated the movie industry • The Hollywood 10 refused to testify because the questioning was unconstitutional 2. Hollywood executives created a blacklist of people who would not get hired anymore because they were accused of being communist
D. Spy Cases • Alger Hiss was suspected of spying and was convicted for perjury. • The Rosenbergs were accused of helping the Soviet Union develop the Atomic Bomb and sentenced to death

E. The Space race Soviet Union takes an early lead with the launch of Sputnik. (the worlds first artificial satellite.)
F. A U-2 is shot down! Khrushchev calls off peace talks and the 1960s opened with tension between the two superpowers as great as ever.

The Other America • Mexican American Communities • Many who were recruited under the Bracero program and stayed in America when their employment ended. • Discrimination grows -Operation Wetback- Mass Deportation -Longoria Incident- undertaker in Texas refused to bury Mexican American in white cemetery.
3) Chavez Ravine • City proposes a new housing project and evicts Mexican American families. • Land is given to owner of the Dodgers for a new stadium
B. Poor Whites • Many areas of the nation still experienced extreme poverty such as the Appalachian Mountains where 1 out of 3 people lived in poverty -average income was 23% lower than the rest of the nation.
C. Jim Crow South • The murder of Emmett Till and the failure to convict his murderers brought national attention to the atrocities of the Jim Crow South.
