Progressivism • Robert M. LaFollette— • Governor of Wisconsin • Almost militant progressive leader • Took control from crooked corporations & gave it back to people
Progressive Women • Became active in settlement houses • Children’s Bureau • Women’s Bureau • Became Department of Labor • Florence Kelley—1st Illinois factory inspector • Muller vs. Oregon—protected women workers because of weaker bodies
…. • Lochner vs. New York— case invalidated 10 hour work day • 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire—BAD—146 people killed—doors locked—bad conditions
Effects • In 1917 30 states started providing insurance to workers injured in industrial accidents
18th AMENDMENT • 1919—18TH AMENDMENT– STOPPED THE SELL OF ALCOHOL
TR’s Square Deal • 3 C’s • Control of corporations • Consumer protection • Conservation of natural resources • Coal miners strike in PA— • TR used big stick—threatened to seize control of mine • Compromise—10% pay increase & 9 hr work day
TR Corrals the Corporations • Interstate Commerce Commission -1887-not working well • Roosevelt the “Trust Buster”—wanted to stop monopolies on key products • Taft busted more trusts than TR
Caring for the Consumer • The Jungle— showed terrible conditions in packing houses • Wanted to focus on workers—instead focused on unsanitary food products • Meat Inspection Act of 1906 • Pure Food and Drug Act 1906
Earth Control • Set aside 125 million acres of land in federal reserves • Wanted to use the land intelligently • Not abuse • No romantic preservation either

TR’s Legacy • Enlarged power & prestige of presidency • Helped shaped progressive movement • Grandfather of the New Deal • Showed US they shared the world with other nations
