HOLY IN LIFE,HOLY IN WORSHIP Introduction: • 1 Tim. 2:8 Connects the 2 Main Ideas of Chapter: • Vv. 1-7 Importance of prayer in worship • Vv. 8-15 Imperative of holiness in life of worshiper • Men Who Lead “Holy” (hosios) in Character: “Religiously right, holy, as opposed to what is unrighteous or polluted….associated with righteousness” (Vine, Dictionary of NT Words) • Must Be Holy Both in Life & in Worship • Right with God in heart, character, daily life • Right with God in conduct of worship • God Not Want Either-Or BUT Both-And

Men Lead in Worship • Specific Word for Male: NotAnthropos (“a human being, whether male or female” as vs. 4) ButAner (“any male person,” Thayer; “never used of the female sex,” Vine) • “Everywhere:” Rule Given by Inspiration of God for Every Church (1 Cor. 4:17; 7:17; 14:37) • Lift Up Hands: Outstretched Arms, Palms Held Upward, Customary Posture in Seeking a Gift from a Superior (1 Kgs. 8:22)—Custom Regulated, Not Bound (Rom. 16:16)—No Such Custom Now

Holiness in Heart & Life Imperative • “Holy” (hosios) in Character: “Religiously right, holy, as opposed to what is unrighteous or polluted….associated with righteousness” (Vine) • “Undefiled by sin, free from wickedness, religiously observing every moral obligation, pure” (Thayer) 3. If Heart & Life Defiled, Worship Defiled • Wrath: Settled Anger, Bitterness, Ill Will • Doubt: Evil, Critical Thoughts Against God or Man • Any Persistent Sin Defiles a Worshiper: Fornication, Lascivious, Drink, Gamble, Covet, Curse, Etc. • If Defiled: Correct Sin—Then Worship (Matt. 5:23-24)

Vv. 9-10 Holy in Dress & Demeanor • Apparel (katastole, from kata + stello, to send or let down, to lower): Garment hanging down so as to cover • Modest: In Proper Order, Decent • Divine Principle Sets Order: Gen. 3:7 (Apron—Girdle, loin-covering) Gen. 3:21 (Coat—Garment generally with sleeves, coming down to the knees, rarely to the ankles) • Shamefacedness: A Sense of Shame Rooted in Character

Men & Women: Holy In Life & Worship (1 Tim. 2:8-15) • Sobriety: Sound Mind & Judgment, Self-control; Careful, Cautious, Conservative • No Carnal Display: Not Drawing Undue Attention to the Flesh • Godliness: Reverence for God • Good Works: Holy Character Seen Not Only in Dress When Worship, But Also in Daily Life • Holy Character Shaped by Divine Principles • Character Defiled by Immodesty: Skirts & shorts expose thigh, Low cut dress & blouse, Backless & strapless, Swimsuit, Tube & tank top, Tight, Formfitting, Cheerleader, See-through, Etc.

Vv. 11-15 Letting God Define Her Role • Learn & Participate in Worship, But Not Exercise Authority Over Men • Principle True from the Beginning • Eve Violated This Principle, Led Adam to Sin • Her Great & Unique Work: By Her Godly Character, Shape the Child’s Heart & Life • Satan Promises Blessings If Violate This Principle— “Holy” for Women to Participate in Business Meeting, Sing Solo, Lead Songs, Lord’s Table, Chair Committees & Ministries, Teach, Testify, Deaconess (Rubel Shelly, “Freeing Women…,” LoveLines, 6-4-03)

  11. III. Holy In Life & Worship? • Grow Closer to God If Faithful in Worship 1. God’s Wisdom & Power in Pattern of Worship-- Every Act of Worship Draws Us Closer to God, Makes Our Character More Holy Like Him • Do I Attend Faithfully? Hit & Miss? In & Out? 2. Must Participate to Benefit • Do I Participate With Whole Heart, or Distract Myself & Others? Intentionally Sleep? Bored? 3. Two Basic Elements of Relationship with God: • Listen to God—Speaks to Us in Scripture • Talk to God—Communicate with Him in Prayer & Worship

  12. III. Holy In Life & Worship? B. What God Expects of Men Who Lead 1. Holiness, Purity, Sincerity in Heart & Life 2. Self-examination (2 Cor. 13:5)—If Guilty of Sin, Make Correction without Delay! 3. Do Not Be Double Minded—a Hypocrite— Destroy Own Soul & Others C. What God Expects of Women 1. Holiness, Purity, Sincerity in Heart & Life 2. Self-examination: Holy in Dress? More Interested in Fashion? Try to Look Like Teenager? Close to Line, Resent Teaching? Fulfill God-given Role or Resist, Resent, & Rebel? 3. Do Not Be Double Minded—Correct Sin w/o Delay!

  13. HOLY IN LIFE,HOLY IN WORSHIP Conclusion: • God Seeks Sincere Souls Who Want to be Holy in Life & Holy in Worship • First, We Must Repent of Sin & Obey Gospel: Gal. 3:26-27 3. Next, We Must Learn & Grow: Be Faithful in Worship, Make Needed Changes in Life 4. If Fall Back Into Sin, Repent & Make Correction: 1 Jn. 1:9
