How Far Would You Run for a Doughnut? Do the extra sprinkles make me look fat? Yes they do! By: Seba Al-Aker 6D Mrs. Hannah Taher Mathematics Due Date: 8/11/10
1. How does someone work out the number of calories they burn when running? • First, they have to know their weight. Then they have to multiply their weight by the distance they want to run. After they get their answer they have to multiply1.036. The result they get will be in decimals so the easiest way to know how many calories you burned, will be to round the number to the nearest whole number. For example: Weight: 411.2 Distance: x 3.5 21060 Add: + 12360 12144.20 Multiply: x 1.036 816520 Add: + 1432600 0000000 14420000 Result: 149.39120 Rounded whole number: 149
2. How far would they have to run to burn the calories that are in a doughnut? How did you work this out? • They have to know their weight and then multiply 1.03. Once they get their answer it might be in decimals so they need to round it to the nearest whole number. After they do that they need to divide it by the calories that are in the doughnut they ate. If they have a remainder they would have to round the number again to the nearest whole number. The answer they get will be the distance they need to run. Example: ( My Working Out) 410.5 X 1.03 5 r10 42 220 1215 + 0000 40500 41.715 Calories in a glazed doughnut Rounded WholeThey would Number: 42 have to run 5 kilometers.
3. How can knowing how to do arithmetic with decimals help you make good health decisions? • Knowing how to do arithmetic with decimals can help you make good health decisions if you keep your data in a chart. It can help you calculate how many kilometers you need to run to loose a certain amount of weight. For example if you weigh 80kg and you run a certain distance the next time you weigh yourself you might weigh 75kg. Doing your calculations with decimals can help you get a more accurate answer.
