What is Body Mapping Power? • A participatory tool to understand the different types of power people have or need in a given context
Body mapping empowerment tool • Identify a major current issue your programme is trying to address e.g. provision of healthcare • Identify one of the primary beneficiaries in your project e.g. healthcare for rural women • For each type of power (resource, knowledge, positional and personal), brainstorm all of the different things which can empower them to claim adequate healthcare • Tip: consider invisible and hidden power, not just visible powers they need • Map these on a body map
1. Body mapping empowerment needs In relationship to the issue brainstorm what are their power needs? What knowledge power do they need? What resource power do they need? What personal power do they need? What positional power do they need?
2. Body mapping current power In relationship to your project tick those which they already have (traffic light) Red: Don’t haveAmber: PartlyGreen: Have What knowledge power do they have? What resource power do they have? What personal power do they have? What positional power do they have?
Empowered to… Knowledge Power Positional Power Personal Power Resource Power 3, 4, 5 How empowered are people? 3. Use the traffic light analysis to represent the average size of each circle e.g. mostly green = a large circle (empowered), mostly amber = medium sized circle; mostly red = small circle
4. Identify what activities you are currently doing for each circle to empower people
What activities are you doing to address this persons resource, positional, knowledge and personal disempowerment?
5. Identify further activities that you or others need to do to increase levels of empowerment
