Approaches for CCR092 and 094 Integrating Reading, Writing and Affective Learningfor Developmental Students
Theory To change behaviors, we must first change perspectives. • Epistemological beliefs • INFLUENCES
Reading and Writing are processes that mirror one another Pre-reading Reading/Annotating Post-reading Pre-writing Drafting Revising/Editing
Foundations • Foundational strategies must focus on giving students the basic comprehension skills needed in order to build to the critical reading abilities required of college-level coursework. • Much of the popular reading strategies (SQ3R, etc.) employed in current reading pedagogies only work well for students that already have these foundational skills. • Much of the current strategies have students thinking and asking questions before and after reading, but not during reading, which is what expert readers do. • CCR092 must begin at the foundational level and must get students thinking as they read.
Practice Pay attention to the page – Reading MUST be the foundation for any integrated approach Introduction to patterns of analysis • Students must understand relationships (in texts, in ways of thinking) – causal, comparative, etc. Tasks - Identifying patterns in reading • Vocabulary in context • Signal words and phrases • Annotating/labeling to reflect patterns/relationships within text
Practice Pull it off the page Readings • 5-10 pages each assignment • Non-fiction essays; passages from trade books • Transformative academic texts – focus on affective issues: • Mindsets (Carol Dweck) • Deliberate Practice (Geoff Colvin) • Success/Failure/Persistence (Malcolm Gladwell) Tasks • Synthesize information and organize using graphic organizers • Reflective conversation
Practice Create your own page Writings • Minimum of two pages in MLA format: 4 papers in 7 weeks • Reflective but incorporates academic concepts from transformative texts • Writing is structured around analytical modes (causal/comparative) Tasks • Use graphic organizers to synthesize and organize student thinking • Writing Application – Reflective essays that focus on applying content of readings to personal experience/beliefs
The CCR092/094 ConnectionWhere do we go from here? • Next piece of the course must transition from understanding/knowledge-making to critical thinking • Approaches to criticizing texts (bias, fallacies) • Writing longer, more academic essays (argumentative essays which require research/citations) • Research reading based on content-specific texts This can also be the reading piece of a CCR094 course.
Later Assignments in CCR092/Reading Portion of 094 • Students write argumentative essays on topics that require research • Reading work is based on researching the topic and critically evaluating that research • Writing products: • Argumentative essays – minimum of 4 pages, with proper MLA format and citations • Reading products: • Critical annotations and written evaluations of research conducted for the subject/essays
