  3. Success Criteria • We will be successful if we can describe the 4 components of natural selection by taking detailed notes and completing the PhET simulation.

  4. 4 Components of Natural Selection • Darwin used the term Natural Selection to describe his theory of evolution. • Nature favors the survival of organisms that are best suited for their environment. • There are 4 components to natural selection that we will learn about today

  5. 4 Components of Natural Selection • Variation – Organisms exhibit variation in appearance and behavior. • These variations may involve body size, hair color, facial markings, etc. • Some traits show little to no variation among individuals, like the number of eyes in vertebrates.

  6. 4 Components of Natural Selection • Inheritance – some traits are consistently passed down from parent to offspring. The traits that produce the best possible survival of the organism are the ones we want to pass down.

  7. 4 Components of Natural Selection • Overproduction – each species produces more offspring than can survive. - Not all can survive because there isn’t enough food or space for all.

  8. 4 Components of Natural Selection • Survival of the Fittest – only the strongest organisms will reproduce offspring with a chance of survival.

  9. Illustrations • Taking a piece of white paper, fold it into four sections • For each section draw one component of natural selection. Crayons are in the bin in the art supplies cabinet.
