  1. The Sport and History of Western Horsemanship and Rodeos Ariel Nichole Berry AP Literature and Composition Ms. Saunders

  2. The Sport and History of Western Horsemanship and Rodeos • Double G Ranch volunteer work • Summer camp as a product • Prior knowledge

  3. Horsemanship • I found out a lot about horsemanship through my mentor, Leisha Griffith and her husband, Brock Griffith. • Women and barrel racing. • The first bull riding association was the PBR. • Bull riding and calf roping used during religious ceremonies.

  4. Research • If a rider is practicing natural horsemanship correctly, he will never stop working with his horse. • “[Natural horsemanship] is not only about educating horses, but teaching owners to communicate effectively with their horses, by ‘speaking’ a common language” • It takes both a horse and a rider working together to develop communication skills. Horses and the trainers have equal responsibilities.

  5. Product • Summer Camp - 2013 • Horsemanship and rodeos

  6. My Mentor • Leisha Griffith • Accredited Horse Trainer and Barrel Racer. She specializes in barrel racing, riding lessons, confidence building and performance horses. • She won the first All-Women’s Trainer Challenge at Equine Extravangaza and was crowned a champion Colt starter. She also trained and competed in the Extreme Mustang Makeover. She placed 11th in the competition, brought her horse Sweetwater home with her.

  7. My Mentor Continued…

  8. Some Things I faced • The art of teaching • Better horsemanship skills • Time management • Taught the summer camp • Demonstrated horsemanship and rodeo skills • Arranged and planned the camp

  9. Product • 28+ hours • Research – horsemanship and rodeo events • Product – intertwined the two through teaching • Taught riders how to apply the skills

  10. Obstacles • Bad weather leads to a change of plans • Time management is helpful in more than just school • Teaching is not as easy as it looks • Kids are fast learners;take advantage of it

  11. Closing Time • Thank you for your time • Are there any questions
