How many people are affected by eating disorders? • 5 % of young women are affected by eating disorders • 5 to 10 % of anorexics and bulimics are males • 1 to 3 % of middle and high school girls are bulimics • 9 million children over age 6 are obese • 29% of adults are obese (Almost 1 out of 3)
Types • Anorexia nervosa • Bulimia • Compulsive overeater (also called binge eating)

Anorexia Nervosa • Fear of becoming fat • Self-starvation • Isolates self • Appearance- skeletal, emaciated, loss of hair • Effects • Stunted growth • Heart disease • Brain damage • Death
Bulimia • Extreme overeating (bingeing) • Elimination of food by -Vomiting - Purging (taking laxatives) - Fasting - Diuretics
Bulimia continued.. • Appearance – normal, within 10-15 lbs. of healthy weight • Effects: - Stained teeth & swollen gums - Kidney problems - Malnutrition (deprivation of nutrients) - Chemical imbalance
Compulsive overeater (Binge eating) • Appearance – Extremely overweight (obese) • Eats large quantities of food at one time • Lack of control over eating habits • Cannot stop eating • Effects - Weight gain - High blood pressure - Heart disease - Diabetes
Eating Disorder Vocabulary • Binge – a period of uncontrolled self-indulgence • Purge – to remove or empty bowels (using laxatives) • Vomit – to remove the contents of the stomach (using syrup of ipecac or self-induced with fingers) • Compulsive – an irresistible impulse • Obsessive – an unreasonable emotion causing preoccupation
