Eating Disorders- any range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits. • Cause serious medical complications, including osteoporosis, irregular heartbeat and even death • More common with women than men • Considered to be a mental illnesses • Most are unwilling to get help • Signs can be difficult to detect • Occurs mostly with people in teenagers and early 20’s • A problem around the world • Social pressure to be thin is the start of many eating disorder
Anorexia-an emotional illness in which people refuse to eat. • Underweight • Restricted eating • Severe weight loss • Avoid food for psychological reasons • Symptoms include low blood pressure, slow heart rate, and growth of fine body hair • Affects personality, they isolate themselves from family and friends • Appear depressed
Bulimia Nervosa-disorder in which individuals have frequent and uncontrollable periods of over eating • Experience overeating called binges (cannot stop until they are completely full) • Vomits to get rid of the calories they intake • Do not gain weight • Laxatives to help empty bowels • Exercise excessively • Temporary starve themselves • More frequently women have bulimia • Caused by childhood experiences, family influences, and social pressures • Can damage teeth and gums because of vomit
Binge Eating Disorder- a serious eating disorder in which people frequently consume large quantities of food • Many people overeat but for these people its on a regular basis • Usually done in secret • Deeply embarrassed about it • Try to stop but can't • Causes significant weight gain • After feels guilty, out of control and depressed
Night Eating Syndrome-persistent pattern of late-night binge eating • Abnormal overeating at night • Eat majority of their food during the night • Do not always binge • No control over eating patterns • Equally common in men and women • Often obese or overweight • Causes high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol • Messes with their sleeping schedule
