  1. Welcome to Transition City Leeds 19 APRIL 2008 Web: http://transition-city-leeds.wikispaces.com Email: transitioncityleeds@hotmail.com

  2. Transition City Leeds: The story so far Sept 07: Transition Town Network talk in Leeds Nov 07: Initial meeting at the Common Place Winter 07-08: planning meetings for this event (funding from ESRC grant www.autonomousgeographies.org) April 08: First public meeting THE FUTURE…..

  3. Aims of the day • To share what the idea is about • To gauge interest across Leeds • To discuss key thematic issues • To decide how to take Transition Leeds forward • We are passionate about changing • our city and neighbourhoods!

  4. Timetable 10 am Morning Plenary + questions. comments 11.15am How the day is going to work 11.30 am Tea break 12 pm Participatory Session One 1pm Lunch 2pm Participatory Session Two 3pm Tea Break 3.30 pm Final Plenary: Action Points 4.15 pm Final Plenary: Neighbourhood mapping 4.45 pm Next steps forward

  5. MATT CARMICHAEL STOP CLIMATE CHAOS LEEDS

  6. Global Warming: the problems

  7. Tipping Point: • Feedbacks: ice caps melt, forests die, permafrost melts, wetlands & peatbogs drain, oceans acidify • Irreversible changes: oceans rise, species die, feedbacks release more GHG than we can sequester

  8. We are starting this battle 30 years behind schedule

  9. So we need energy supplies without GHGs: “renewables”

  10. Foreseeable problems according to Yorkshire Forward: Flooding, sewer overflow, drainage problems, reduced river water, increased demand for water, droughts, poor water quality, disrupted transport, insurance blight, reduced investment in at-risk areas, increase in injuries and deaths, agricultural drainage and irrigation problems, river bank erosion, over-abstraction, loss of biodiversity, forest/ moorland fires, storm damage to crops and buildings

  11. Not mentioned by Yorkshire Forward: Food prices & food infrastructure Agricultural and human diseases 7m sea level rise brings coast to Selby, wipes out farmland area size of W Yorks and causes Hull to be abandoned International aspect affects us: refugees, trade, legal action?, resouce wars? political instability Moral aspect

  12. Responses: -Denial • Business as usual • Mitigation • Adaptation

  13. JOE ATKINSON POWERSWITCH

  14. Oil production, world population Time Not running out, but… ?

  15. Other fossil fuels?

  16. Peak Oil: When?

  17. Summary • Peak Oil is serious, and urgent • Political & economic system stress • Declining material wealth • We have choices about how to react: • Passively: hope for the best • Actively: engage & manage issues • Individually or collectively

  21. dfgdfdddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddfgdfdddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd a brief introduction to Transition Towns

  22. What is a Transition Town? …..or village, city, island… A Transition Town is a community that is working together to look Peak Oil and Climate Change squarely in the eye and address this BIG question: "for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?" The resulting coordinated range of projects across all the important areas of life leads to a collectively designed energy descent action plan.

  23. Beginnings • Based on work by Rob Hopkins, and students on his two year permaculture design course. • They developed an ‘Energy Descent Action Plan’ for the Irish town of Kinsale in 2005. • Rob moved to Totnes, and set up Transition Town Totnes. • The process draws on ecological design methods like permaculture, participatory meeting methods like open space and insights from disciplines like addiction counselling.

  24. Four key characteristics • Participation • Connecting and celebrating existing groups • Raising awareness and attracting new people • Collective knowledge for local solutions

  25. Participation • Methods like ‘Open Space’ and ‘World Café’ • Everybody’s contribution is important, not just the views of academics, experts and politicians • Actively learning from the past – asking elders their stories • Actively engaging the future – working with children to create new stories and visions of the future

  26. Bringing together existing groups • A new focus for existing groups • An opportunity to celebrate and put new energy into work that has been going on for years • For example – cycling action groups, community food groups, youth workers, green activists, community development workers all have important contributions that are needed to help create a more sustainable city • Groups that work together have more impact

  27. Raising awareness and new audiences • Communicating the urgency of climate change and peak oil to the wider community • Honest about the situation, within a positive framework for action. Emphasis on benefits. • Encouraging people to create local solutions • Inviting new people to get involved – not just the ‘usual suspects’

  28. Collective knowledge, local solutions • Bringing together skills, knowledge, visions and imagination. • A focus on practical solutions • A focus on local and achievable projects • Working towards the development of an ‘Energy Descent Action Plan’ – a long-term redesign of the city to be sustainable, resilient and more self-reliant.

  29. Activities in Transition Towns • Raising awareness – films, speakers, discussions, workshops • Training – courses in permaculture, local food skills, renewable energy, knitting… • Creating new resources – local food directories, skills directories, websites, local currencies – the “Totnes Pound” • Practical projects – Community Supported Agriculture, Veg Box Schemes, eco-housing projects, tree plantings • Community building – oral histories, schools work • Mapping the present and Planning the future!– Energy Descent Action Plan, visioning

  30. Who can set up a Transition Initiative? • There are fifteen criteria that we need to meet to be considered an ‘official Transition Town’. • They include things like: a commitment to be inclusive; to actively engage with the national network; ask for help when its needed… • Part of the purpose of this meeting is to see if there is enough interest to take it forward, and how we might do that.

  31. Options for setting up Transition City Leeds • Local Transition Initiative – a steering group inspires and organises the local community response. • Local Transition Hub - based in a large area with its own identity (eg a city). Helps establish and support "local transition initiatives". • Temporary Initiating Hub - a collection of individuals work with each other to help set up "local transition initiatives. As the initiatives arise, the hub disbands. • Regional Coordinating Hub – existing transition initiatives that get together for mutual support.

  34. Two final points • We used huge amounts of creativity, ingenuity and adaptability on the way up the energy slope. There's no reason why we can’t be even more creative on the way down. • With collective planning and action we can create a way of living that's more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment and each other, than the oil-addicted treadmill that we find ourselves on today. In short, a brilliant opportunity to create the sort of world we really want for ourselves and our children.
