What do we observe happening today? Evolution Kinds (Bible)
What about the creation or evolution of life itself? Can life ever come from no life? Evolution as a total concept demands it (at least once). Do we observe it? Can we repeat it by experimentation?
Chemicals formed in the “primordial soup” Chemicals bonded together to form molecules Molecules bonded together to make a living cell + Life? = Life The Issue – The Model of Evolution • About 4.6 billion years ago the earth formed
Atoms The basic unit of matter MoleculesSpecific arrangement of atoms (H2O) Amino AcidsSpecific arrangement of molecules ProteinsSpecific arrangement of amino acids Building Blocks of Life
Law of Biogenesis States: Only live comes from pre-existing life. There has never been an example of anything else! And yet, evolution demands a origin from non-life!
Spontaneous Generation?Abiogenesis? States: Somehow, given the right circumstances, life can create itself from non living materials. But, Louis Pasteur’s experiments proved that life cannot arise from non-living materials.
The Miller-Urey Experiment It's Alive! … or is it?
How did Miller know what gases were in the early earth’s atmosphere? Were the amino acids the right type of amino acids for life? Critical Thinking Two things to analyze:
The Claim by Evolutionists The early earth’s atmosphere did not contain oxygen. The Early Atmosphere Critical Thinking Question Is there any scientific evidence to support this claim, or is it based on a belief in evolution?
“…geologists know from their analysis of the oldest known rocks that the oxygen level of the early atmosphere had to be much higher than previously calculated. The Early Atmosphere “New Evidence on Evolution of Early Atmosphere and Life,” Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, Nov, 1982, pp 1329.
"There is no scientific proof that Earth ever had a non-oxygen atmosphere such as evolutionists require. Earth’s oldest rocks contain evidence of being formed in an oxygen atmosphere.” The Early Atmosphere Harry Clemmey, Nick Badham, “Oxygen in the Atmosphere: An Evaluation of the Geological Evidence”, Geology, Vol 10, March 1982, p. 141.
Oxygen and Life “Oxygen is a poisonous gas that oxidizes organic and inorganic materials on a planetary surface; it is quite lethal to organisms that have not evolved protection against it.” Peter Ward (Ph.D. Geology) and Donald Brownlee (Ph.D. Astronomy), Rare Earth, 2000, p. 245.
Origin of Life – A Conundrum • Life cannot start with oxygen in the atmosphere • Life cannot start without oxygen in the atmosphere
Over 2,000 types of amino acids Only 20 are used in life Amino Acids
“Since Miller’s beguiling picture of a pond full of dissolved amino acids under a reducing atmosphere has been discredited, a new beguiling picture has come to take its place. The new picture has life originating in a hot, deep, dark little hole on the ocean floor.” Collapse of the Miller Experiment Freeman Dyson, Origins of Life, 1999, pp. 25-26. (Dyson is a Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and a member of NAS.)
“As the gases circulated in the chamber, sparks, representing lightning, supplied energy to drive chemical reactions. The experiment generated organic compounds including amino acids - the building blocks of proteins.” Modern Biology, Holt, Rinehart, Winston, 1993 Textbooks
Simple Cells? Really? Enormous Complexity
DNA: • The most compact and efficient information storage system in the known universe
The shear amount of information contained in the DNA of a single person is staggering! “There are 75 to 100 trillion cells in the (human) body. Taking the lower figure, it means that if we stretched out all of the DNA in one human body and joined it end to end, it would stretch to a distance of around 94 billion miles”. Dr. Carl Wieland
The amount of information that could fit on a single pinhead of DNA would be equivalent to the amount of information contained in a pile of average size novel books that if stacked on top of each other would reach 240 times as high as the distance from the earth to the moon!
Sir Francis Crick: Discoverer of DNA • “An honest man, armed with all of the knowledge available to us now, could only state that in some sense, the origin of life appears at the moment to be almost a miracle, so many conditions which would have had to have been satisfied to get it going” Crick quoted in Panspermia, March 9, 2003.
Panspermia! Life originated in space and then came to earth!
Directed Panspermia! ETs in spaceships shipped life to earth!
The Tyranny of Distance Remember how large the universe is? The aliens or any other life out there would have to figure out how to travel incredible distances in order to get to earth.
Space is not empty! At light speed a collision with just one of these tiny objects would actually destroy a spaceship.
Michael Denton, author of the best selling book Evolution: A Theory in Crisis: • “Nothing illustrates more clearly just how intractable a problem the origin of life has become than the fact that world authorities can seriously toy with the idea ofpanspermia”.
Don't Teach This in High Schools! • "One of the reasons I started taking this anti-evolutionary view, was ... it struck me that I had been working on this stuff for twenty years and there was not one thing I knew about it. That's quite a shock to learn that one can be so misled so long. ...so for the last few weeks I've tried putting a simple question to various people and groups of people. Question: 'Can you tell me anything you know about evolution, any one thing that is true?' I tried that question on the geology staff at the Field Museum of Natural History and the only answer I got was silence. I tried it on the members of the Evolutionary Morphology Seminar in the University of Chicago, a very prestigious body of evolutionists, and all I got there was silence for a long time and eventually one person said, 'I do know one thing – it ought not to be taught in high school'."
