  2. In Ireland • Waste management companies in Ireland are no longer accepting certain kinds of plastic for recycling, as China is no longer accepting imports of such waste for recycling • Last week in Fingal, the contracted waste management company started charging • 80c per lift and 4.5c per kg

  3. Waste Reduction Bill – currently being debated! • The Bill (draft law) would introduce a 10c deposit on plastic bottles, which would be refunded when you bring the bottle back for recycling. • Ban or levy on single use non-compostable cups and tableware

Dear Deputy Dooley, We understand that the Committee on Communications, Climate Action and the Environment is considering the Waste Reduction bill next week and the next actions the committee will take. We urge you, as the Fianna Fail environmental spokesman, to support this bill and its provisions to ban certain plastic single-use items and to establish a deposit refund scheme for drinks containers. We ask you to move this legislation onto the next stage of Dail consideration to ensure that we reduce the amount of unwanted plastic in our environment and to place the burden of waste management and disposal back on to the producers, where it belongs. As long as packaging and waste producers pay only a pittance for placing unwanted plastic onto the market, there is no incentive for them to reduce their waste creation. Consumers, who now must pay for recycling and waste disposal costs, are sick of plastic. This was clearly illustrated during the national Sick of Plastic Day of Action at supermarkets on the 21st of April where thousands of shoppers left their plastic packaging behind. Please urge your colleagues to support the Waste Reduction bill and take a stand to reduce plastic pollution. Kind RegardsYour name.

What can you do in Rush? • Write to: The Manager, Tesco and Eurospar, Rush • Write to them and ask them to: • Offer more items without packaging, such as fruit and vegetables (without plastic trays, wrapping and nets) and fresh bread. • Ensure their own brand packaging is easily compostable or recyclable, or plastic-free • Only carry brands that have easily compostable or recyclable packaging, or plastic-free • Implement a plastic free aisle. • Set up systems whereby consumers can buy items in bulk. • Set up a system whereby customers can use their own containers to buy dried goods, buying only what they need
