Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue Colin Gardner Kaboodle Software
It’s a game of 4 halves! Old Borrowed New Blue
Something Borrowed SP2010 Lets you switch user identity interactively SP2013 Removes this capability (exactly why is open to debate) But as any developer will tell you it’s an indispensable feature when testing So we put it back! • It’s borrowed because it’s just linking to an existing application page
demonstration Alt Login
Alt Login – in Summary Alt Login is completely free Download from http://www.kaboodlekonnect.com/downloads/2013 Install the version at a scope that suits your needs You’ll never find a solution simpler than this one The latest version now works with Google Chrome Give us some feedback
Something Old Kaboodle Image Slide Shower (KISS) Yet another Image Rotator - just what the world needs! Well yes actually: If you want one that works with SharePoint Online That uses HTML 5 only (no reliance on JavaScript libraries) That has dynamic content that is pulled from SharePoint lists That links to external content and documents That can cache data so that it will work with anonymous users That uses the SP2013 call out framework That can auto rotate on a schedule or user click or both That can exploit hundreds of transitions and fades Oh, and its totally free (or will be)! • It’s an Ad Rotator but not as we know it
demonstration KISS
KISS– in Summary Yes, KISS is another image rotator but one that’s driven my SharePoint list data fields It’s HTML 5 not JQuery but that means that a modern browser is needed, IE9+ It’s SP2013 only and was specifically designed for operation with public facing website in SPO It’s not released yet but when it is it will be completely free If anyone is interested in trialling the beta please let me know
Something New Kaboodle Renditions New, in the sense that no one else is quite doing this Renditions is a family of 5 products Today, we’ll just look at Convertor and Word to Wiki
Document Management Lifecycle Production Team authorship Restricted distribution Emphasis on collaboration (below the line) No authorship Wide distribution Emphasis on sharing and use (above the line) Utility Retention/Disposal No authorship Restricted distribution Emphasis on preservation (beyond the line)
demonstration Renditions
Renditions Converter Takes source Word Documents Converts them individually or in balk to various output formats (PDF, XPS, TIFF, ePUB, DOCX) Can map metadata Can publish to the same farm, a remote farm or to O365 Can automatically update Can automatically delete Smooths and automates the transition from Production to Utility
Wikis: The Good the Bad and the Ugly(Wikis in general and SharePoint Wikis Specifically) The Ugly • The authoring experience is disappointing • Too often the need to hand craft HTML • Importing existing content is just plain nasty • Need to upload (or otherwise make linkable embedded content e.g. images) The Good • Quick and ready access • Easy search • Easy cross linking • Decentralised authorship • More dynamic • Great for tacit knowledge The Bad • Got to learn the syntax • Easy to change means easy to make errors • Cross linking within the same library only • OOTB no self cross referencing • OOTB no TOC • Decentralised authorship might not fit with the business culture
Wikis: Conclusions(Wikis in general and SharePoint Wikis Specifically) • Don’t take on a battle you cannot win! • Let users create content using tools they are comfortable with (meaning Word for the most part) • Make it a technical problem not the user’s problem • If the wiki is for content presentation make it read only – although comments and feedback is cool • Make the wiki self generating
demonstration Renditions
Renditions Word to Wiki Takes source Word Documents in SharePoint libraries Publish them as SharePoint wiki web pages automatically or on demand Strips out images, saves them to SharePoint and automatically stitches back up the HTML Can map metadata, automatically delete Can publish to the same farm, a remote farm or to O365 Can set things up so that authors have nothing to do other than keep the source Word documents up to date Great for sharing specific content with partners or the public.
Renditions – in Summary A family of 5 products that convert Word documents and archive or replicate documents of any type Is a commercial product but has a free unlimited trial Word to Wiki is the only product (I know of) that: Converts Word documents to SharePoint Wiki pages without pain Can automated conversion process Works cross farm and to SPO/O365 with zero footprint at the target location Works in both SP2010 and SP2013 with all SKUs, Foundation included Find out more and view my cheesy YouTube videos from here http://www.kaboodlekonnect.com/renditions Download it from here http://www.kaboodlekonnect.com/downloads
Something Blue Santos seems to be my main customer at the moment 3 Main projects in the last 6 months SharePoint integration with their GIS (Oracle Spatial) :SPC Jul 14 (Sydney) Integrated Disturbance Planning (IDP) – project management and tracking system Asset Management System (AMS) Document Management Centric Need to tag documents with Geo objects Need custom site navigation Need custom cross-site navigation
demonstration AMS
AMS The OOTB navigation elements can sometimes be rather restrictive No global navigation, even the new MMS driven navigation is limited to the site collection Web site navigation limitations Left navigation width issues Tree node issues No control over tree view Quick links is only 2 levels Delegate controls are the a super cool way of replacing the OOTB controls you don’t like with ones that you do like Deployed as a Feature and so can be switched on or off as needed Zero impact on the master page
