  3. Ever wonder… How many stars are in the universe? How many planets are in the universe? How many of these planets could support life (as we know it)? What are the “building blocks” and recipes of life? Where and when in the universe are these building blocks created? How life works and how robust is it? How can we establish the presence of life elsewhere in the universe? Can we communicate with life elsewhere in the universe? http://astronomy.nmsu.edu/cwc/Teaching/ASTR305/Spr07/

This course is a “science” course… What this means: What this doesn’t mean: We will be studying the western world’s scientific view of life, which is only one view (though the authors would have you believe it is the only legitimate view). We will learn about the scientific view of the origin of life, the evolution of life, and to some extent, unspoken, the very meaning of life as we know it. Keep this in mind throughout the course. This does not mean that the scientific view is the correct view, or, if you will, The Truth. It does not mean that the material taught in this course is without bias or prejudice- it is biased and prejudice (as are all your courses!). Nothing can ever be proven true. No matter how one rationalizes knowledge and understanding, the adoption of any system as being The Truth (science, evolution, religion, creationism, etc.) is founded upon one’s personal faith in the system.
