If wewant to establish and maintaintranformedrelationships, we must adopt a moral stance towardour communication withothers and master communication skillsthatfosterethical interactions» Johnson, 2007

  5. Obligation Ethical obligation to engage ‘the other’ exploring the ethical solutions to issues. What are our challenges? Disabilityitself? Skillsneeded? Selectivehearing? Cultural assumptions Stereotypes Prejudices Prejudgments

  6. The ethical way Whenfamiliesdifferfromeachother and the professionalito how theyview and respond, whatis the ethicalway for professionals and families to deal withthis population? Professionals have two sets of ethics (professional & personal)

Ethical framework for communication Experiencing‘the other’ withoutreducing, negating or totalizing the other’sotherness Attitudes brought to the encounter Refuse to believeyou know and understand the toughts, feelings or intentions of others – continuously test & revise How communication canidentify, challenge and reconstituteitself to more adequatelyacknowledge and engage ‘the other’?
