  1. Daoism The word Taoism is the older form of the religion. Founded by Laozi in the Fourth Century B.C.E. The DAO (way) is taught through Two main texts. The Daodejing and the Zhuangzi.

  2. An Introduction to Daoism • Daoism is not an actual religion. There are vague references to God and the “after life”, its as if there are none. • Daoism is about the here and now. Living a happy life without causing to much commotion. • Daoism is all about Harmonizing with nature and finding inner peace.

The Dao beliefs • Seeing Clearly (don’t let others rule you) • Know Thyself (who you truly are) • Detached and Nonjudgmental (don’t be a critic) • Do not try, Only Do (Put all effort into it) • Think Independently (exactly that) • Expand Thyself (mentally) • Have Faith in Life (trust in others) • Right Here, Right Now (don’t worry) • Enjoy Life (do it don’t ask why don’t worry about it)

  4. Dao Beliefs Cont. • Laughter (laugh frequently, laugh hard) • Nature (love it, live it, be one with it) • Nonresistance (don’t fight just let it be) • Tao Te Ching (Daodejing) • Wu Wei (spontaious action)

  5. About Laozi • Laozi is said to have been the historian in charge of the archives of the state of Zhou. When he realized that the state was falling into a decline, he went to the mountains in the west on an ox. At a mountain pass. He was asked to write down his teachings. He wrote 2 books that totaled 5000 characters.

  6. About Laozi Cont. • The two books that Laozi wrote were known as the Daodejing and the Zhuangzi. • These books outline and explained Dao (the way) to find peace and happiness in life.

  7. Dao Rituals (Jaio) • One major Taoist ritual is the jiao • A rite of cosmic renewal • Which is itself made up of several rituals

  8. Dao Rituals (the temple) • Temple rituals can be used to regulate ch’I • Balance the flow of yin and yang • Beneficial to both individuals and the wider community

  9. How society views Daoists • Taoism was one of the strongest religions in China • After a campaign to destroy non-Communist religion, the numbers significantly dropped • It has become difficult to assess the statistical popularity of Taoism in the world.

  10. Subdivisions of Daoism • Southern Daoism • Perform rituals and exorcisms in public to align the cosmos • Frowned upon in northern Daoism. • Northern Daoism • Emphasizes moral • Spiritual discipline • Also continues • self-preservation
