  1. AP: KHS Chemistry students test suspicious lighters that are potentially part of a growing ring of concern around tampered products on store shelves. See article on page 5 for the full story. A representative for Dollar General said, “Why didn’t they ever teach me this stuff when I was in school?” after she learned of the student-led investigation. Headline: Lighters recalled from Dollar General in Kirtland, Ohio **This is for educational purposes only. Dollar General was not involved with creation of this fictional scenario.

  2. Your investigation: 1.use the ideal gas law, PV=nRT, to calculate the molar mass of the mystery gas 2. determine the identity of the mystery gas using this calculation and other properties of the gas

  3. Consider the limitations you discussed with your partners and as a group yesterday, like how to get rid of water vapor pressure and how you can control the pressure of the gas inside the tube. In your notebook, write down the data you will need to collect about the gas in order to determine its molar mass. Should you measure a dry lighter or a wet lighter? Explain in your notebook. PV = nRT R = 8.31kpa*L/mol*K

  4. Freedom of design: only the science matters! Things that don’t matter Things that do matter ? • ?

  5. Remember Accuracy Precision When calculating moles, be sure to use the correct units T in Kelvin V in Liters P in kPa AND of DRY gas only (subtract out water vapor pressure

  6. Do you know what you need to do? Yes: get a lighter from me, collect your data and calculate the experimental molar mass of the gas! The wiki has a table of water vapor pressures at various temperatures for you to subtract out of barometric pressure (dry pressure needed) Show me your result for molar mass when completed and rate your confidence in your data and calculations on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most confident) No: see me for clarification

  7. HW: • Research your gas and write a short list in your notebook of possible matches.
