Literacy analysis part 1 Coherence (repetition of key words can bring cohesion to a section of text)
Class Practice • Hans discovers Liesel’s first stolen book. Read from “Now why would a nice girl like you want to read such a thing?” (pg. 65) through to the paragraph that ends “as any ten-year-old human would experience.” (pg. 66) • What repeating idea is present in the passage that connects to the book found in Liesel’s bed?
Now you try… Get out a piece of paper
Read Part 1; pg. 78 paragraph beginning “clouds were filing in now” through to pg. 80 • Identify elements of coherence present in this short paragraph and explain how it connects to the book Hans found in Liesel’s bed. • Page 77- “and the sun” summarize what the presence of the sun causes Liesel to feel • What does Liesel rely on to solve her immediate problem of not being able to read? • Focus on the word “cloud” as it appears on page 78, “Clouds were filing in now….” How does that relate to the sun? • Page 79 also mentions clouds- what do you think they mean? • What can you infer about this change in Liesel’s behavior from relatively non confrontational to pummeling two boys during recess? • How do the clouds or the weather reflect Liesel’s emotional response on her walk home? • Connect all of this together. The clouds and the weather create coherence throughout this passage. How does this all work together to tell story?
