  3. Definition The theory and study of signs and symbols, especially as elements of language or other systems of communication.

  4. Triad of meaning ( the object/referent; the person/ interpreter ; the sign ) ---Charles Saunders Peirce Sign Interpretant Object (Peirce’s triad of semiotics)

  5. Variations ① Semantics - Addresses how signs relate to their referents or what signs stand for. (e.g. dictionaries) ② Syntactics - The study of relationships among signs ③ Pragmatics - How signs make a difference in people’s lives, or the practical use and effects of signs & their impact on social life.

  6. Conclusion • Signs take the forms of words, images, sounds, gestures and objects. • Semiotics helps us to realize that meaning is not passively absorbed but arises only in the active process of interpretation.
