  1. Starter • Study the labelled picture of a Roman legionary for 2 minutes. Try to remember as many details as you can. • Study the kit of auxilia as well

  2. It’s fashion week in Rome. Write the commentary for a catwalk for a Roman soldier in full uniform. Try to include as many features as you can. Include a soldier modelling what an auxilia would wear.

  5.  Your task Can you think of any reasons why the Roman’s built Hadrian’s Wall in AD 120? What did engineers consider when they planned where to build it?

  7.  Your task • Study the information on p.44-5 of ‘Contrasts and Connections’. Work in teams to find evidence of: • Discipline • Diet of soldiers • Health & living conditions • Write a paragraph explaining which source is most useful for finding out about life at H.W.

  9.  Your task Archaeologists have found thin slices of wood, with writing on. They date from 1st Century AD. They were used a postcards by soldiers and sent home to their families. How useful, are these documents? Use the postcard template on the Studyhistory website and imagine you are a Roman soldier. Write a postcard home describing conditions at Hadrian’s Wall, food & discipline Conduct your own research into the Vindolanda tablets to add more details

  10.  Extension task • Conduct some research into the Vindolanda Tablets? Find out when and how they were excavated. List 5 things historians have discovered

  11.  Homework • Complete your postcard home from Vindolanda.
