Dealing with Going Digital • Preservation • Metadata • Online access
Preservation • Bit rot • Migration • Refreshing • Replication • Storage • Physical deterioration
Bit Rot • gradual decay of storage media or (facetiously) the spontaneous degradation of a software program over time. • patch files based on a given version of a program's source code to failing to have the intended effect when applied to the current version.
Migration • Preventing digital obsolescence • Transferring of data to newer system environments • Transferring from one operating system to another • Transferring from one programming language to another
Refreshing • Moving information from one medium to the same medium. • Backup tapes from servers • CDs last 10 years, often less
Replication • LOCKSS • Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe
Emulation/Encapsulation • Replicating a system • representation information to interpret the for access; • the provenance (source information) • the context • identifiers to uniquely identify the object; • and fixity - evidence that the object has not been altered.
Digitization vs. Born Digital • Digitizing- you have access to the original • Born Digital – electronic only
Metadata • PREMIS • Dublin Core • METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard)
PREMIS • More of a guide • significantProperties [Object entity] • objectCharacteristics [Object entity] • creatingApplication [within objectCharacteristics, Object entity] • environment [within objectCharacteristics, Object entity] • signatureInformation [Object entity] • eventOutcomeDetail [within eventOutcomeInformation, Event entity] • rights [Rights entity] • agent
