Course Description • Overall Objective • To help the students with their English proficiency in academic contexts where medicine is the subject matter
Course Description • Rationales for this course • Shift from English for General Purpose (EGP) to English for Academic Purpose (EAP) and English for Specific Purpose is the trend of English teaching and learning at tertiary level in China.
Course Description • Rationales for this course • Although inseparable, EAP differs from EGP in many respects and warrants special attention so that the learners use English language proficiently and properly in academic contexts.
Course Description • Rationales for this course • English for Academic Purpose entails a vast array of skills and a good knowledge of the subject matter.
Course Description • This course, therefore, is framed to provide the students with opportunities • to expose themselves to the subject matter related to medicine, • to develop language proficiency and skills as needed for communication in academic contexts, • and to use English language in simulated or real situations where English language serves as the medium for communication.
Objectives • To enrich themselves with knowledge of content matter such as treatment and prevention of diseases, alternative and supplementary medicine, emerging and reemerging diseases, etc.;
Objectives • To expand by a large margin their vocabulary, especially those specialized terms in medical context;
Objectives • To be able to prepare and deliver presentation with/without the aid of PPT on the topics related to medicine;

Requirements • Be autonomous in your English learning; • Be engaged in out-of-class listening practice; • Read the text critically and get ready for any activity in the classroom; • Accomplish the assigned oral presentation in class; • Get dynamically involved in any classroom activities;
Requirements • Enlarge your vocabulary and language knowledge and improve your sense of the target language; • Enrich yourself with knowledge of medicine-related issues; • Accomplish writing assignments; • Ensure your attendance.
Assignments • Writing tasks • Submit the written tasks in the format specified by the instructor; • Check and correct mistakes/errors before submission; • An electronic word count for all written tasks; • A word limit of ± 10% applicable to all the written tasks; • The electronic version emailed to the instructor 2-3 days before the due date;
Assignments • Writing tasks • A paper version, if required, handed in to the instructor in class; • Writing tasks handed in ontime to be corrected, graded and returned promptly; • Delayed submits (within 5 working days) to be evaluated with lowered credits; • Submission delayed by longer than 5 working days not to be accepted.
Assignments • Classroom Oral Presentations • You are supposed to deliver 2-3-minute presentations on the given topics related to the content of the text (Topics for presentation of Text A).
Assignments • Classroom Oral Presentations • Your presentations will be integrated into other classroom activities when the related part is discussed. • Your presentation is judged by preparation, pertinence, fluency, pronunciation and reaction from the audience. • Your presentations account for 10% in your final grade.
Academic Honesty • Students should be well aware of the policies and regulations concerning academic honesty in Fudan University. Students are believed to be honest. Cheating, plagiarism, forgery and knowingly furnishing false information in your academic work are grave matters that are subject to discipline. Disciplinary action for academic dishonesty can range from an automatic grade of F on an assignment or exam to a grade of F for the entire semester.
